I have owned various rifles, shotguns, and handguns, but never an AR.  I am looking at a RRA AR-15 A4 Varmint in 5.56/.223 with a 16" SS bull barrel and 6 position buttstock.  Brand new for $800.  Seems like a great price.   I would hunt small game with it from time-to-time, but also love to target shoot, and hoping it could double as a SHTF/HD weapon if needed.  It feels great and does not seem too heavy, considering it has a bull barrel.  I would like any opinions please, before I plunk down 8 bills.  That is about my max budget as well, which I know isn't a lot of $ when talking about this type weapon.

Thanks!

If that's brand new in the box it's an excellent price. You get the benefit of the RRA 2-stage "match" trigger with all new RRA's, and that's a $100+ aftermarket item right there.

Sounds like a deal to me.

and we're off!...

First of all, i don't personally like RRA rifles.  But that is a personal thing and has more to do with what i think about value/cost.

With that said, i would nix the SS bull barrel on a 16"  I don't see where that particular setup will do anything better than another setup... its going to be heavy, no ability for a flash hider... which is a MUST if you are considering using it as a HD weapon... which is a whole nother story....

It may not seem heavy now, but lug it around awhile at high ready and do some mag changes.  Itll get heavy soon enough.

Another thing to consider... are you going to change anything on it?  Stock, trigger, pistol grip, rails, BCG?  Anything you change out, that adds to the cost.  You can resell some of the parts.. but you wont get even half of what you will be putting out in upgrades.

I personally think for the price, you could find better options.

While RRA is not my favorite anymore, do to their common long waits on direct orders rather than quality. I think RRA has very good products, And $800 is a great deal for that specific rifle if it is NIB. I do kinda agree with Durabo about the barrel in a 16", I'd go with an 18" if I was going to get a RRA Bull barreled varmiter/target gun.

But hey, if you like it and it's what you want go for it. As far as just wanting to know if it's going to be a good quality accurate rifle, I give RRA a +1.

By the way, what is an HD rifle?

I see no reason that it would be a "MUST"
There are WAY more HD guns without a FH than with...

Have you ever shot an AR at night w/o a flash hider... in an enclosed space?  You'll be momentarily blinded, thus not being able to see what you are shooting at, and the concussion will probably do some serious damage to your hearing.

I like RRA. I agree, for me a bull barrel is a lot to pack around but the 16" bull barrelled upper I had was an excellent shooter.
Price is good. Go for it.

Like others have said, a bull barrel will be a lot heavier, just keep that in mind.

Unless it will be living off a bipod or bench, I have no desire for a bull barrel.  Unnecessarily heavy for what you get, IMO.

Oh there will be flash and bang, and it wont be fun, but far from a "Must" and it wont suck near as much for you as the guy on the floor

If it was a "Battle rifle" I would agree 100%
