How important is the spring tension on the ejection port?

I recently got my upper back from a reputable smith and after inspection I noticed that the cover doesn't flip out and is only pushed out by the force of the BCG or gravity.  I hate to be bothersome and nit-picky to the guy but I also don't want to run into problems down the road if by chance the cover bounces back and interferes with ejection of brass.

I plan on calling him on Monday and discussing it but I just want to make sure I'm not over-thinking things and being over protective of my baby...your thoughts?

Happy New Year Everyone

He just didn't give the spring a twist when he installed it. No big deal. You can fix that yourself if you need to.

Do I need to pull out that rod on the port cover to get to the spring?  Seems I would have to remove the rail he just installed in order to give it clearance to come out and be twisted properly?

The rod can come out the other way, towards the rear. Does your upper receiver have a forward assist? That will be the part you have to wiggle around if you pull the rod out towards the back. If you just got it back from a smith who installed a railed forearm, it might be worth it to take it to him to see if he'll remedy it with no charge.

You ought to be able to shoot it in the meantime.

You can pull off the tiny C-clamp to fix the spring but i'd have the gunsmith do it, he's got the tools and spares as it's very likely to lose the little clamp.

It would bug me that he didn't get something that simple right the first time.

Only one end of the rod (rear or front doesn't matter) needs to to be slid halfway out to access the spring. Complete removal isn't necessary.

What brand of rail? Even with no handguards the factory barrel nut is too big to allow the ejection port cover pin to slide out towards the front.

On my 9mm port, I can't slide out the front or rear.
Is there a trick to it? I tried pulling out the rodwith a needlenose and it won't budge.

You removed the c-clip first, right?  Should slide right out.
