Looking for unbiased answers...Will a scope rated for airgun recoil be reliable on a 5.56 AR-15??

I wouldn't count on it.

I wouldn't do it, but you may get a better answer in the optics forum here. Just sayin...

Airgun optics that are specifically rated for airgun recoil usually refer to the type of recoil that you see in spring powered guns. Spring guns have a sharp forward recoil from when the piston reaches the end of its travel, and this forward recoil is what the optics are rated against. So, when you see an optic with something that says it's safe for airgun use it's saying that the optic is ok for the sharp forward recoil of the gun, which really doesn't help you much on an AR.

Some scopes are rated for both. Airguns (pistion) have a reverse (from a rifle) recoil and can be quite hard on optics. The MFG specs might be the best sorce depending on the optic.

I'm sure ther are others that will elaorate on this.....

I wouldn't count on it holding zero after a few shots.

I wouldn't bet my life on it at all. They don't make the scopes for the airguns to the same standards as a scope specifically made to endure the recoil, abuse, and in some cases heat.

Have gone down that road and it's a dead end.

Well if all you plan to do is plink with .22 ammo give it a try. If .223 or 5.56 is in your min, look elsewhere

I have seen a .22 pellet rifle destroy a leupold vx1. It had something to do with the reverse recoil of the way the pellet rifle worked.

Got it. Scratch my first comment.

I have a pellet rifle that destroyed a low price simmons rifle scope.  I think a spring piston pellet rifle rated scope would easily stand up to rifle recoil, but the real question is why would you want to do that?

My simmons crosshairs gave out after 20-30 shots.

I wouldn't do it, not because you'll damage the scope (which you will) but because you should really get a decent scope, at least one designed for firearms.
