What is the rationale behind having both notched and smooth hammers for AR's?  Are they intended for different applications?  If so, what are they?

Thanks in advance for any information.

I have heard that notched hammers don't work so well with 22 conversions.  But I haven't tried it.  I don't have a 22 conversion or any notched hammers.

The notched hammers are designed to be used with an SP1 style carrier and firing pin. The intent is that it will lock up the carrier  on the froward movement if the hammer is not retained by the disconnector or the trigger to prevent a second round firing without a second trigger pull.
The SP1 parts got a bad rep because the parts made by different companies were not to spec and caused problems for some. Also some do not like the fact the hammer is cocked by dragging across the firing pin and tht the carrier weight is less.

Just had this discussion

Notched hammers were meant for semi rifles and were meant as a barrier preventing conversion to full auto in conjunction with unshrouded carriers.  If like the disconnector spring failed for some reason the notch in the hammer would catch on the firing pin.

At least that is my understanding.
