So i know what an M16A1, M16A2, and M16A4 clones look like. Was there ever an M16A3? if so what did it look like?

An M16A3 is just an M16A2 with a full auto fire control group rather than burst.

They were (are?) used in small numbers, mostly by Navy Seabees.

M16A3 IS THE SAME AS AN A2 except it is full auto instead of 3 round burst. Used by the US Navy.

Never have seen one marked A3.

All the rifles I have handled while assinged to Naval Construction Force units are marked M16A2E3 and made by Colt.

Safe, Fire and Auto markings with standard A2 800m rear sights.

And yes we still have them and use them.

My two active commands had FNs marked M16A3.

Besides the newer rifles that are marked M16A2E3, we still have a bunch of rifles that were converted to M16A2E3s, quite a few (At least in the Gulfport armory) are built on XM16 and M16A1 lowers.

Maybe I got lucky and only had to handle the Colts. I have never seen markings like that in units I was assinged to allthough I knew they did exsist. Some units are sporting M4's now at least seven was in Haiti.

We got them (Colts) in the Armory here in DC.

There may be flat top M16A3s in service now as well.
