I'm looking at buying a 14.5" upper and having a vortex pinned. What's involved with pinning an flash hider on? Is it something any gunsmith could do? Anything to watch out for?
Thanks |

Thanks if its a good smith there shouldnt be any problems to watch for. ADCO will do this. Check there website out for pics I like the 14.7+ and the 14.5+ Also BCM might have it instock |

I'm looking to order the smartgunner Daniel Defense deal they have going right now. The Vortex comes pre-drilled. I just didn't know if it was something simple to do or not. Thanks |

I had the same question as you, and searched and found a couple different answers.
http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=407395 I am going to go with the SS technique as I already have the MAPP gas, and all I had to do was order some SS paste, and heat paste. Also ordered through SmartGunner.com, and went with the build your own upper, and got a 14.5 with the YHM 5C2, just going to perm attach it myself since Tommy said they do not do the pinning anymore. |

FWIW, I have a L1A1 that I bought from a dealer during the the ban. It came with the muzzle break silver soldered on the full lenght barrel. So why wouldn't silver solder be accepted in this case ? ( to make the barrel conform to the 16" lenght) It's LEGAL!!! Everything you EVER wanted to know about Silver Soldering a Flash Suppressor |

If you do the footwork yourself, its easy and cheap to do.
I drill the hole in the flash hider, attach the flash hider, then I drill again but into the threads this time, very carefully. After that you can drive a pin in place (making sure it sinks into the threads). Take it by a welder and have them make a small bead over the pin. Smooth it over with a file, etc, and touch up with some blue. The guy who does mine charges 5$ each. I also get to drink a beer while he works. |

I figured it would be really noticable. I actually had to look really close to find the pin. It's nice and flush and if you weren't looking for it, you'd never see it.

I am leaning towards this method but with the SS method you can more easily rmove the fh if something else catches your fancy. |
