My father in law is wanting to build an AR-15. We already have the stripped lower. This time instead of 5.56 we want to have it shoot 7.62x39. I see a kit for 7.62x39 listed in the shotgun news magazine we get. My question is can we use this kit with out AR-15 stripped lower? What else do we need? If this will work where can we buy the magazines that will fit in the stripped lower and accept the 7.62x39? Thanks in advance.

pretty sure that the lower is different, or would have to be adapted.

AR in 7.62x39 have a poor reputation around here.  Nothing against the round, but they have just never been very reliable.  Even the Colt-made 7.62x39 guns were unreliable and their mags had to be severely downloaded to function decently.  I have never shot one, but I had researched the topic for myself a few years back.

If you are looking for another caliber, I'd recommend 5.45x39.  Still very cheap surplus out there and the uppers are very good.

I asked him and he is pretty set on the 7.62x39 round. So the lower we have would not work?

You can use a standard AR lower if you want to use AR mags that are made for 7.62x39.

If you want to use AK mags, you use a dedicated lower or a magwell adapter.

BTW, I love 7.62x39.  Throws up a lot more dirt than 5.56
