I'm buying first ar next, should I get a .223 or 5.56 caliber. Which caliber is better. It's my first rifle also.

Get one with a barrel marked 5.56. Then you can shoot both .223 and 5.56.

Buy this. You will not find a better rifle for $800.

He may have 2K to spend. In that case, there are  better choices.

I like the BCM RECCE-14 Mod 0 at around $1,350.00.

Can't argue with that. (precisely the reason why I don't have a Spikes). Though given it is his first AR, and he will learn what he wants in a rifle as he goes along, getting a quality rifle for a low price is a very smart option.

If I had $2000 to spend on a first AR (knowing what I know now), I would get a similar rifle to the Recce you posted, or build my own configured similarly, Slap a T-1 on top of it, buy 12 Pmags and 1000 or so rounds of ammo and go have fun.

I found a Bushmaster 16" Carbine at the local gun store for $899. I couldn't pass it up. It will be my first AR once I get it off layaway!
The thing I really liked about it is that it's stamped on the side with 5.56 and .223 which gave me the peace of mind that it would would work fine with both.
You definitely want to get one that's chambered for 5.56 then you can be sure that .223 will work too.

Just because the lower is stamped "5.56mm or .223Rem" doesn't mean the barrel is chambered to fire both cartridges.

If you have the option to back out of the layaway, do so now. You can grab the Spikes that I posted above (a much better quality firearm than the Bushy) for $100 less than that Bushmaster.

My thoughts exactly when I read the post about the Bushmaster.

Yep,

I made the same mistake and bought a bushmaster because they had some custom shop model. Turns out the barrel was a match .223  only. Luckily, they took it back as it was not clear to them and took a few days for bushmaster to figure it out as well. I then ordered the Spikes and I have to tell you it is a much nicer rifle and built noticeably better. It cost me just about $100 more than the Bushmaster because I upgraded to a troy flip down rear sight, free float rail, Magpul CTR stock, Spike's trigger guard, magpul MOE grip, BMC mod4 charging handle and color fill. It is a really nice rifle and it has been perfect at the range so far. Cancel the layaway if you can.

Get a barrel for 5.56.    The chamber is the only thing that affects which round,  the lowers are all the same regardless of the marking.

Sorry, your blinded by love and can't get an subjective opinion.  Everyone loves their first AR, lol.  But spikes does give a 5% discount with arfcom promo code.  Its all about price, how much are you looking to spend?  There are different deals at different price points.   But I agree the the Spikes is very hard to beat for the price.  But if your like most, you will want to change out the forearm, grip, stock, and maybe the sights if your going with an optic.  If you one of these people you might want to go a different route.
