Have had this upper since April. Hasn't seen any harder use than the rest of my guns, but this is the only one showing this much wear on the area where the charging handle rides. Normal or should I contact the mfg?

I have seen it with varying degree of wear. That seems a bit extreme for a relatively new weapon. It's how the dimensions of the charging handle and the channel it rides match up. I have seen where that raised area on top of charging handle is a bit to tall which tends to wear more of the upper. I'm sure it will mainly just wear finish and stop to a point. Just for kicks, you might want to measure charging handle with a caliper and compare with some others.

500, if it was an older upper I wouldn't care, but I've barely used the thing.

I would say a tolerance issue with the upper or charging handle. Looks like everything has worn in and probably wouldn't be an issue but if it were me, I would send a picture to the mfg. and see what they want to do for you or if it is an issue in their eyes. I would suspect you will get a new upper though.

It would most likely look like that sooner or later. Yours is just sooner.

Could also be caused by the way you grab and operate the charging handle. I guess I pull mine up when I pull on it, because there is almost no finish left on the top inside of my receiver where the charging handle rides...

Mine has the same marks on the back. I usually pinch the latch one handed and pull it to the rear. I do the same on all my uppers, but this particular one has eroded the finish fairly rapidly. Functions fine, just wanted to check that it was indicative of something worse.

Sounds like maybe a thin finish on yours. That receiver is almost 3 years old, but has only around 2500rds through it...

You may fire 500 rounds with only one charging handle pull.

Over 1500 rounds on mine and there's no wear whatsoever, though the charging handle
has been pulled dozens of times.

In your case, the wear is excessive.

I have a M4 that has the same wear from CH
M4 has around 2000rds

My other M4 has close to 3000rds and still looks New
Even the carrier & bolt looks newish

OP

Dont worry about it.

Same thing happened on my upper with less than 200 rounds through it (although I do rack the bolt a lot by using the charging handle when I just take it out and admire it). I ended up having a out of spec CH that just scratched the shit out of it. Got a new one for free and I havent noticed any further wear in that area since.

My 2 BCM uppers have that wear. It only took about 500rds of use.  Odd my  2 other branded uppers do not.

List of possible issues

High tab on charging handle
Charging handle ears machined off placement
Upper not broached properly
Shooter induced from chosen tactic in changing the weapon

Good news AR uppers are cheap, this is my only issue with mono/poly type uppers, they are not nearly as rebuild able.

Lesson learned watch you rifle closely till its past its break in/trust zone (500 rounds)
