how much should I hammer them in?  It's a BCM upper and I had the devil of a time in getting them out.  Now I don't want to go through that again so how hard should I hammer   ... BFH or LFH?

Are they tappered pins?  They should go back in the same way they came out.  Do not try to put them in backwards.

they are tapered and going in the correct way.

I just wonder how hard I should hit them!

You hit them hard enough for them to seat roughly in the same position that they were in before you removed them. It's not brain surgery, man.

You should not need much more that a light hammer and a punch.  Use a sight block or wood block as a base.  It will take some force but not much.
You could do some major damage to the gun or yourself with a bfh.  Take your time, don't get frustrated.

The BCM pins were a PITA to get back on my upper.  I was worried that the original ones got damaged so I knocked them back out and replaced them with Colt taper pins.  Still a PITA but they went in better than the original.

YMMV,

The trick to getting taper pins out is to let them soak in PB blaster. If that doesn't work then heat up the opposite side that you are hammering on with a heat gun or torch.Putting them back in is simple.Set the FSB on a bench block or piece of wood and hammer them back in.I like to use a brass punch in case it slips. Also lube the pins up before putting them back in.
