used 400 grit silicon carbide lapping grease....think that should do the job?

Why ask why?

Snake guy, looks good.  Any reason to true an upper is a good way too stay away from the "Help, I can't zero........."

Lapping the face of the upper allows the barrel extension to sit flat, flush and square to the upper increasing accuracy! M4QUADRAIL

You should relieve some of the diameter just infront of the step.

Otherwise your abrasive will work its way into the inside of the upper where the barrel extension slides in and you will do more damage than good.

Look at the brownells version to see what I'm referring to.

I did actually...can't see it cause it's filled with compound.

Not as much as the brownells but enough for it to do the job.
