Just build a new upper.............

Why do you want to change the barrel?

If you take your question to the Retro Forum (where there is a ton of discussion about SP-1's), you will get a number of responses on why your plan is not a good idea. Your upper is more valuable just as it sits. New uppers are dirt cheap, so just build what you want, and leave your original unmolested.

Well I didn't really want an SP1..but my wife heard me say I was looking at ARs and she went out and got me one..now I'm stuck with what she got me, gift from wife never gets sold you know. After shooting it it's ok but would really like to try out that 6.8SPC round. Just put together 2 16" kits , one for my brother one for me and was thinking on changing my SP to larger cal.

Dude! Dude! Dude! Don't change a thing. Anything you do to it wiill destroy it's value. It's a true collectors item. It's a pre-ban Colt!!!!!! It's a top notch firearm just as it sits. Do NOT change a thing.

Kit guns are cheap and simple and easy to come by. Your SP1 is a classic. Do some research and find out what you have.

I guess that is a better idea , just trying to keep it looking the same so as not to hunt wifes fellings you know..great wife ..good shot also

ultimately it's your rifle and  your call. if you don't throw anything away, you can go back when the new's faded.
you ARE aware that SP1's and SP II sporter two's take a "large pin" upper?
the pivot pin is larger .310"ish vs .250". there are various adapters out there to make the .250" pin fit, but its easiest to get a big pin upper.
there ARE aftermarket big pin uppers, even flattops. but they are relatively scarce.
take a deep breath and think it through.
i know what i wouldn't do.

Build a  new gun, buy another one, but let the SP1 go to a collector before you start taking it apart. Just my opinion. It is your gun.

Welcome to the quicksand!
There is no known cure, but regular infusions of money keeps it in remission.

Wish I had your problem. Hell I wish I had someone (single guy here) that was thoughtful enough & wanted to spend that kind of coin on me to buy me a rifle.

IMO, I'd leave that SP1 as is & start another build for your 6.8 hunting rifle.

Sounds like your wife is a keeper. Lucky dog.

You'd start a riot over on the retro forum talking about modifying a nice SP1. You would probably get tarred and feathered then run out of town on a rail.

He did post this in the Retro Forum after it was suggested here. You know how the results come out.

I'm sure by now you have done some research, what year was it made?

Both my SP-1 carbines are KISS. Plain jane no frills origional. They get used but not abused and are well kept. I highly recomend you do the same.

What an oppurtunity you have here. Let your wife know what a great purchase  / investment she made and really lay it on thick. Use this forum as your "look here honey" asset.

Then you go on to tell her how important it is to build the rifle you really want to guarantee your SP-1 is kept pristine and has some company.

Now welcome aboard and enjoy your BRD.

You said she was a great shot, keep it like it is and when going shooting let her shoot it.
With the shorter stock and liter weight it may fit her better.
I have both an SP-1 & Sporter II and they will never be modified.
