So I've drunk the coolaid, so to speak, and have decided to pick up an AR. I'm looking for opinions. I'm not looking to brake the bank, take on Al'Queda or defend my family from zombies. I just want a solid, dependable rifle that's gonna look and shoot like the one Uncle Sam issued me back in the day. I'm thinking about a Stag arms model 3.

Any opinions? Does anyone have one? What can I get for in the neighborhood of $900-$1200?

Spikes or BCM.  With the Spikes, you can get the rifle, rail, light, mags and ammo for around $1200 and still have a top tier rifle.

The Stag has been and still is the best bang for the buck, and it will perform right up there with the Spikes. Congraulations on keeping away from the kool-aid and having a rational mind of your own. Besides, who knows what direction the kool-aid drinkers will be going in next year? For years it was Colt, for now it's Spikes, in a year or two who knows which way the wind will blow. It may still be in the direction of the overpriced $1200+ AR for those that drink the drink....<><....:)

I certainly wouldn't say that people are abandoning Colt Kool-aid drinking to be Spike's Kool-aid drinkers.

OP will most likely be pleased with a Stag AR.

You do not always get what you pay for.  But you never get what you don't pay for.  If you've carried issue weapons, you will recognize the difference if you decide to go cheap.

The Stag is good, but I'm not sure if you would want better? It doesn't get any better than BCM & Spike's right now. Of course, there's still Colt, LMT, Sabre & DD as well.

Get a mil surp Colt or FN M16A2 upper at a gun show and put it on an AR lower. Affordable and that old GI feel, with out the third position.

There are all kinds of decent quality ARs you can get in that price range.  That mitten-shaped state next door to you has a company named "Bushmaster" that makes a fine AR for the money.  And of course, to the south of you in the Connecticut River valley you have those companies named "Colt" and "Smith and Wesson."

You stated that you are not looking to take on terrorists or defend against World War Z, but ask yourself, what ARE you wanting this rifle to do?  Always define the mission FIRST before shopping for hardware.

It won't shoot like the one Uncle Sam gave you, because that one had a third switch position.

As for myself, all I ever require of any of my rifles is that they be capable of emergency defensive use and they provide enjoyment as recreation/sport shooting pieces.  I think probably 90% of ARFCOM members have the same requirements.

Assuming your requirements are similar, the Stag rifle you mention looks fine for that mission role.

Welcome to ARFCOM, and give my regards to New Hampshire (former resident here).

The Stag will serve you well.

I own Colts, Spikes, Bushy, Etc. and the Stag will serve you very well in that price range. Is it the best? Maybe not, but well worth the price.

heck.. i have seen daniel defense rifle for about $1200..

i would spend about $700-800 for a basic flat top rifle of decent make.. rock river, dpms, stag, delton..   and figure out what you want from that.. it's difficult to know exactly what you want before you have it and shoot some.   chances are you will spend the money.. and figure out down the road you want something different.  you may have to upgrade, trade, sell.. and get what you really want..  it happens to all the AR newbies i have known... (including me)

my first ar was tricked out (for the time) Hbar with fluted barrel bushmaster in '91.. or maybe '92 (i think i ended up putting Hogue handguard on that thing.. YUCK!!..  (not even an A3)  since then.. i have owned so many different brands and t variations.. but it's never been better than now.. you have so many choices and such good quality products now days.. it's heaven..

model 3 you pointed out seems like a good one.. but bit pricey?  i would imagine you can do better by about $100 bucks on something every similar if you look around?

There are many rifles in your price range, that Stag is not a bad choice. Make sure to start with a good top tier rifle and it will serve you fine for many years.
Stag, Spikes, Colt, BCM, DD are all rifles in that price range that you can customize as you see fit. Many of us have started off with lesser rifles and they will do most everything asked of them (till used in a carbine class, or hard use), but there is no reason to buy a lesser rifle when better is available for the same money.
There is a great thread on this site about what breaks on a carbine, it should be required reading.

I have Spike's and a couple of Colts. Either would make you happy. Look into a Colt 6920 or check out the Spikes website. I have never had a Stag, but my friends who do seem very happy with them. Same with BCM. You can't go wrong with any of them. My best advice is to figure out exactly which config you like best and get it. Often more money is wasted later trying to make an AR into the one you should have bought at the start... But then again that's a major part of the fun of this hobby/ habit... Ignore me I am rambling....

I just picked up a BCM 14.5 middy. If it was my first ar I would go with a Colt or BCM. A lot of people say Spikes is good too. I do not have any experience with them, but i only hear good things.

Armalite mid length it can run abouy 1300 but it is very accurate and mine has never jammed on me plus the mid length gas syetem puts less wear on the blot carrier and allows more customization if you put a quad rail on it

Stag is very good.  Have found them to be VERY accurate.  More accurate than my current upper, which is one of the "you should also look at brand X......."  being tossed around in here.

Don't rule out S&W. There are a number of good deals on them right now.

It's a little hard to say. You have some experience with the M4, and that is a good thing. The question is, what do you plan on doing with it? Just plinking? Shoot, Del-ton and DoubleStar would be good pics for you, along with Stag and a number of others. Home/self defense? I'm gonna ruffle some feathers here: Those brands would serve you just as good. I'm talking home or self defense, not imagining yourself running through the mountains of Afghanisan. Now, if you're even thinking that you might want to run some tactical carbine courses, or three gun matches, or any other number of competitions, the money would be better served going higher tier, such as BCM, Colt, LWRC, LMT, Spikes, etc.. Honestly, I just don't know enough to know how a Stag would match up in a hard running course; there are reasons that the ones above are mentioned; they've proved themselves time and again.

The reason I went with BCM? I wanted a higher quality rifle with the features that I thought of long ago. I was going to buy Colt. But, for the cost of a basic 6920, I bought the BCM with not only more features, but the features that I would have wound up just putting on the Colt anyway. And the BCM is built with the same materials and attention to detail as a Colt. You can get the BCM M4 carbine, with the removable carry handle, for $1135; a little less than what you can get the Colt for unless you do some searching.

Do your research, decide what you expect of the rifle, and you'll be happy. And many say that your first instinct is always the right one. If you want a Stag, get the Stag. But you might find you can buy more rifle for less money.

Best of luck, and welcome to the site.

This.  Stag is great, bought one when they were the best for the money... but for the same price, you can get better materials now... or even midlength gas.

i don't know what the deal is with S&W guns..  they are all so heavy.. first time i owned a 6905? i think.. it was sooo heavy.. i think they use special metal with heavy lead content or something.

heavy metal!

S&W more name than weapon. You're paying a premium for the logo. It doesn't compare to Spikes or BCM dollar for dollar.
