How does a National Match forearm work? It looks like a standard A2 forearm but the barrel is free floated? Is the free float tube separate from the forearm ?

It's a free floated steel tube that the handguards attach to, leaving the barrel free floated.  Most of them also have the sling swivel attached to the tube, so you don't attach it to the front sight base and flex the barrel.
