Alexander Arms makes a .17 HMR Thats interesting... see? you learn something new everyday. So now someone needs to come in and explain why this whole safety issue with .17 hmr in semi autos, and how Alexander Arms gets around that. If for no other reason than just because im interested and I dont feel like googling it

| Alexander Arms is supposed to release a dedicated 17 HMR this year and was even listed in a catalog with price but no production models yet that I've seen. Adam at Ballistic Advantage made a few 17 mach 2 dedicated uppers but I'm not sure if he ever did a 17 HMR. ARfan from this forum made his own personal 17 HMR AR-15 IIRC. I think the biggest problem to overcome is magazines and out of battery ignition. |

Remington .17HMR ammo was deemed unsuitable for semi-auto use due to issues with OOB kabooms. Remington recalled all of their semi-auto 597s and even offered to buy them back due to the issues.
"Remington has been notified by its supplier of 17 HMR ammunition that 17 HMR ammunition is not suitable for use in semi-automatic firearms. The use of this ammunition in a semi-automatic firearm could result in property damage or serious personal injury. If you have a semi-automatic firearm chambered for 17 HMR ammunition, immediately discontinue use of Remington 17 HMR ammunition. If you have any Remington 17 HMR ammunition that you wish to return to Remington contact the Remington Consumer Service number below. Do not return the ammunition to the dealer. " |

From what I understood it was a pressure issue. The pressure spike was happening at the wrong time and magazines were blowing out Rimfire conversions sometimes fire OOB. My CZ V22 upper did it several times. With .22 LR a big fireball came out of the ejection port and it blew the front of the plastic feed lips off. I think it would be a bigger deal with .17 HMR or .17 HM2. |
