Hello to all,

I had just read an article regaring POF's gas piston rifle shooting 20K rounds without any cleaning what so ever. Has anyone shot their rifle that long and how many rounds was it before your rifle choaked?????

Just wondering. I personally can't believe it myself.

I burned up 700 rounds of Wolf back when it was lacquer cased in 2000 through an Oly PCR rifle, had a non chrome lined barrel.  Did it in about 1.5 hours,  barrel was smoking hot the whole time.  Finally, sheared the pin that holds the extractor in the bolt.  At that time, I was getting wolf for $90 per 1k rounds, so it wasn't a big deal to shoot that amount of ammo in a single trip to the range.  However, I've never tried multiple trips to the range without cleaning, I just never saw the need to abuse my firearms like that (by abuse I mean the potential for corrosion, as obviously shooting 700 rounds in less than two hours is more than most civy AR's will ever see).  Also, about two years ago I tested a couple of my then AR's - a Delton build, a WOA upper rifle I had, and a Colt 6601 with modern wolf ammo, rapid fire.  None of them made it through more than 200 rounds in rapid fire without having a failure to extract, resulting in the use of a cleaning rod to remove the case.  In that test, I fired the ammunition at a rapid pace, running the guns until a jam in about a 40 minute period for each rifle.  So they didn't have an opportunity to cool down, but they weren't smoking hot like the Oly was.  They all jammed around the same time frame - 180 rounds +/- 10 rounds.  None made it to the 200 round point.  I think the lacquer cased ammo actually ran better in a hot gun than the polymer steel cased ammo does now, I suspect it vaporized more in the chamber under rapid fire, whereas the polymer coating might be friendlier to non sustained fire.
I'm not sure what the sustained fire rate is supposed to be for an AR-15, but I was a little dissappointed in my newer guns versus the performance of the Oly that I had long ago traded off.  Having said that, don't construe my post as an endorsement for Oly products.  I've had acceptable performance from them, but prefer rifles from other manufacturers.

I feel sick if I don't clean my rifles and pistols as soon as I get home.  I couldn't ever go that far without a good cleaning.

Pat Rogers ran 26k plus through a Bravo co without cleaning

Filthy 14 will be the subject of a SWAT article (October 2010). At the
time that was submitted it had 31,000 and change downrange. It now has
36,000 rds through it.

The saga of filthy 14 has been documented on Lightfighter with USMC03's writing.

I have 13,000 rds downrange on #31- the EAG Carbine prototype
http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-M16-A4-AR15-Bravo-Company-carbine-EAG-Pat-Rogers-s/151.htm

We have multiple Bravo Company guns in the armory, and have a lot of
rounds downrangewith them, several of which have between 10,000- 20,000
rds.

I  have confidence in their guns (as i do other makers guns)

Bravo Company is among the list of guns that i recommend (among others).

The mission drives the gear train.

Determine what that mission is and than buy the best you can with available funds.

Then seek the best training available.

And when you are finished, train some more.

Likewise, however, I do get a bit lazy from time to time. Especially, after a long session of teaching the youngsters how to shoot with my gear. The last thing which I want to do is clean everything.

Hi guys/gals,

With the price of ammo these days I'm lucky to shoot 100 rounds at the range!!!! I wonder thought do you think the rpice might go down since were pulling out of Afghanastan next year????? Aren't they distributing that new fancy 223 ammo now????? Perhaps a big surplus coming home.

ARs are not as sensitive to being dirty as some represent them to be.  A run of the mill AR that is built right with good parts only needs to be lubed occassionally (I try to do it every 500 rounds for a DI rifle) to allow the crud to be displaced.  I only clean my beater/carry AR when I feel like it.  On my precision AR, I clean the bore after every 500 rounds and the rest of it when I feel like it.  My beater AR hasn't had a thorough cleaning in a few thousand rounds, at least.  I'm not saying it's the best way to do it, but I don't use my ARs for protection and I don't use them for work.  For me, they are my toys.  All I'm saying is that they don't NEED to be cleaned to keep them running.  Not one that running right anyway.

That having been said, it is best to keep it clean because the dirt, crud and muck will get to be abrasive and will accelerate wear.  I'm just not to worried about accelerated wear.  I usually get bored with a rifle before I wear it out.

Personally, I hate cleaning my weapons. I do keep them lubed well. Occasionally I run a bore snake down them, but my weapons are not cleaned often. I shoot a lot and I demand 100% functionality. If I had a weapon that would not run dirty, I'd shitcan it immediately. Others can clean if they desire, I am of the same belief as Pat Rogers. My weapons are merely tools, I use them as I use tools. I put them away lubed and wiped down, I have rifles that I have never cleaned. That is my choice.
