What does fluting/dimpling do for a AR rifle?

Is there a difference between the two in performance?

Weight reduction is the main objective (as stated above). In my opinion heat dissipation is a selling point. Again, my opinion. Some dimpling/fluting jobs look kinda cool actually.

To add stiffness for an equal weight barrel at least with flutes.

I would not spend the extra cash on one again.

To put it little differently (but same thing as what Greg said)

To reduce weight while preserving stiffness

I would not flute the barrel if it is shooting good right now. It will probably affect the harmonics of it.

Some people flute the barrel simply for looks. It does look good on some guns but I agree that it's not necessary.

You can tell a difference in weight. I have a fluted 20" barrel and it makes a difference. As far as cooling and accuracy, I dont think it really matters. I would not pay extra for it but if it comes on a barrel already, its nice.
