This is going to be my first AR 15 build, and I thought that I would put up my planned parts list and let the best of the best critique it and make some really good recommendations and give some feedback on any of the items whether i already have them or not. Also, I want to be able to easily and consistently ring steel at 600+ yards, but also be SHTF ready. So, enough talky talky, here it is:
What i Have already: Larue 13.2 rail (wanted the length and got it for 260 new) Lmt sopmod stock Gunfighter mod 4 charging handle Troy BUIS set Troy Modular front grip (want recommendations on stubby vert grips) Tango down rail panels Leupold 1.5-5x24 scope on a larue spr-e mount Surefire m600c scoutlight What i want: Noveske Afghan or Rainier SS (with vltor gas block) 16 or 14.5" barrel (this is where i need experience what are pros and cons of the 16 and 14.5) AAC Brake out, surefire FH, or Battle comp (1.5 for the 14.5 barrel) Vltor upper receiver BCM bolt carrier group Noveske lower Noveske QD end plate MIAD grip Magpul BAD lever MS3 or 2 sling Laserlyte k-15? (always wanted a green laser) Added up All this priced in at around $2450 (without the laser . But it is what i want. So tell me what do you think (other than i am crazy), and make recommendations. Thanks for any help, Ben |

Most things that you hang off of an AR are just to suit your taste. You certainly rattled off a list of names there. Personally, there are a few things that I will insist on or prefer to have for a build and it may just be because of drinking too much koolaide, but I will go out of my way for:
1. A good barrel. I'm running a BCM SS 410 barrel right now, but heck, Noveske, Ranier, White Oak, Superior Barrels, etc., any of these will have you ringing steel at 600, provided that you are capable of doing it. Really, even barrels from Bushmaster and Rock River will do this. 2. An MP and HP tested bolt with a good carrier. I've become partial to the BCM stuff, although it isn't the only game. 3. A good upper and lower receiver set from the vendor/manufacturer of your choice. It doesn't matter as long as they are strong and everything is cut right and is where it should be. Personally, I don't go for billet parts, I like to stay with forged. I think they are stronger and less bulky. 4. A good Fire Control Group. I like the Geiselle SSA trigger and the JP trigger. You made a heck of a nice list so don't cheap out on the FCG. I truly believe that you'd be better off getting a less expensive barrel and putting the money into a FCG. 5. That everyting is put together right. I know that ARs look simple and they are, but if the barrel isn't installed right, it could lead to the rifle not being as accurate as it can be. Something as simple and an over or under torqued barrel could have you tearing your hair out. 6. Now throw on everything else that you want, although all of that stuff that you listed looks like the makings of a 10lb+ rifle. Lastly, I've heard good things about the brake that you listed, but just be aware that brakes are usually loud for the shooter and those standing to the side. If your rifle is going to wind up being pretty heavy, you may not need a brake, but just a good hider. Maybe you could check out that battle comp. I just can't say how that battle comp is going to affect accuracy though. I went with a simply Vortex flash hider. I think I saw a good .25 MOA improvement in accuracy when I went from the Levang to the Vortex. |

+1 Just skip the laser for now, just buy more ammo and mags, get a better more robust laser brand later on like the Laser Devices OTAL or Insight Technology CVL, etc.
I've got the Larue FUG VFG and I like it because of it is convertible size, large, medium, and short, plus I like their polymer material which doesn't conduct heat or cold, it also got storage and QD mount. http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Detail.bok?no=209 Also take a look at LaRue's new HandStop and IndexClip. http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Detail.bok?no=463 I prefer to use Magpul XTM panels rather than my old TangoDown rail panels, don't have to cut the panels to fit also it fits more snug on my LaRue rail. |

JCrowl, how do you like the Vicker's sling? I just installed one on my Benelli M3 shotgun and I'm still getting used to it.
To the OP: Sorry for the minor hijack-looks like a damn nice rifle you've got planned out Pics and a range report will be mandatory once you've got her together! Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Thanks for all the replies some good info. I did post this in the build forums but no such luck on the replies. I do have everything calculated and the whole setup will weight around the 9.5 lbs area (no laser) which i think is great imo. About the laser though, it was definitely last on my list, i have around 10 pmags already and put 2 cases of ammo in my budget as well (gotta have the ammo). i don't want to turn this into a 16" vs 14.5" thread but just convince me to go 16". About thread hijacking feel free to ask questions to other people about they posted, i have no problem with this and it will be just more info to soak up.
Thanks, Ben |
Sounds like a great list. Lose the laser...
The mid-length gas 14.5 is handy. You have to decide on what muzzle device to put on the end of it, and stick with it. The mid-length gas 16 is not much longer. And you can change your mind. I've shot both, there's a slight difference. I prefer the 14.5 |
