For my current build I am using a Sully stock, which came with a standard carbine buffer.  I'm planning on using an 18" barrel with a rifle-length gas system, however.

Do I need to use a heavier buffer, closer to the weight of a standard rifle buffer, or do I just need to assemble it and see how it functions like this first?  I will be using the BCM auto BCG, as well, if that factors into it.

This.

A rifle length gas system should run pretty good.  Just take note of the ejection.

I just built a 16" mid length and went with a stock buffer.  I added a Spike's ST-T2 buffer last weekend and couldn't believe the difference it made.

You will obviously need to try it with your specific rifle, but my guess is that it will run just fine. I've done it myself.
