I traded in three long rifles and a handgun and a grand in cash to buy a new AR. i had some ideas of what I wanted, and when I got to the store....I ended up making some good deals on the trade, but some of the part I brought home, Ive now changed my mind on. I wanted the EOTech 512 with regular batteries. I ended up with the 516 with the batteries that cost 14 bucks for two. I bought a Foregrip that has a built in bipod, when I wanted a harris bi-pod. I did not like the fact that the 516 does not co-witness like the 512 does. They added 9mm of height to it, so that you can almost not see all three together at the same time. I was thinking about getting a G23FTS 3X magnifier, but I didnt have enough money to swing it like I thought I was going to be able to. I am going to bring back the foregrip I bought and trade it for a harris bi-pod. I now would like to know from all of you experienced people if I then buy a Mako t-grip foregrip and a flashlight (handle has compartment for extra batteries too) will the space allow me to also use the flashlight with the harris bi-pod in the up and unused position??????? Ive looked all over and cant find any pictures on this. A surefire g2 (80 lumens) is only 69 bucks, and a M6 (225 lumens) is 349 dollars and I guess you are talking about lots of more Lumens and blinding power for the money difference??????? Thank you for any help you can offer me .........I jumped too quick at buying accessories, as I was really excited about getting a new AR that is easy to carry and light. One of my trade in's was a RRA NM 20" barrel with a lead weight in the stock. I over bought as you cant shoot anymore then 200 yards here anywhere public and I was told not to shoot 55 grains but only 69 and above in it. Thanks everyone !!!! |

First off, welcome to the site CTguy. It's good to have you here Do you ever get up to NH? If so, you are more than welcome to spend an afternoon or two test driving all of the different configurations in my collection. While I don't currently own an EOTech I do own a couple of Aimpoints, ACOGs, and traditional glass in several configurations. I also have several different weaponlight configurations for you to try out. If you'd like to come up some weekend, the first case of ammo and coffee will be on me. Welcome aboard |

That's what I was thinking, unless you got a SCAR or Knight's Armament...BUT value is in the eye of the buyer |

Just some random thoughts...
As far as the 512 vs the 516... While CR123 batteries are more expensive the AA's, I think they make more sense for a combat optic. 1. CR123 are much less likely to leak and screw up the electronics (This has been an issue with the 512's and 552's) and 2. if you are going to have a weapon light, chance are that weapon light will also use CR123 batteries. Woudd't it be easier to carry 1 type of battery for both? I think it would be. As far as the co-witnessing - Are you planning on running the sight with your BUIS employed? if not then what do you care if the sight co-witnesses? Having run the 552 for a while in both co-witness height (sight mounted directly to the rail) and in a LaRue mount which raised the sight and gave a lower 1/3 co-witness height, I found I much preferred the higher mount better as I found it provide for a better, more vertical head position. I suggest you hang onto the 516 for a while and try it out before selling it. As for the Bipod - Considering you went with an Eotech and are taking about VFG and weapon lights, I'm guessing you're trying to build a CQB type weapon? In which case I don't know why you would want to add a bipod to the weapon? All that's going to do is add weight and give you something else to get hung up on. If you really feel that you would want the option to use a bi-pod when needed, then that's where the grip pod you already bought really shines. It spends most of it's life as a VFG but can, when needed, be deployed as a bi-pod. I think that's a much better solution then running around with a harris installed. If on the other hand, if you see this weapon being use primarily with the bipod employed then I think you need to re-evaluate your optic choice? |

Thank you so much everyone for your thoughts. I have been doing a lot of searching pictures on here and there are so many beautiful setups. I felt that the store that took in my old guns for trade in value did a really nice job for me. There is a store on the berlin turnpike that had treated me much worse in the past. The store I went to had boxes of brand new mosin nagants going for 125 bucks, but they still gave me 100 bucks for mine that was really old and used. The ruger 10/22 they gave me 100 bucks for and it had a cheap scope, ruger single six with case and original papers they gave me 175 and last but not least the RRA NM LAR15 they gave me 700 and I saw it in the rack a few days later with a price tag of 950.
The S&W M+P15FT that I got was 1379 the eotech 516 sight was 449 the gpippod forward grip was 85 bucks the troy rail front swivel was 33.00 and I lastly bought Federal XM193 ammo for 89.70. I could have bought stuff at amazon.com, and not had to deal with the taxes right away, but I do like to support my local gun shop to keep them in business too, and I feel that they treated me well and did not "see me coming" like someone here mentioned twice. So now I know that I cant get a Mako foregrip with a trigger and flashlight to work with a harris bi-pod, and I had someone else tell me the trigger on that grip was not the best anyway. I purchased a Viking Tactical Battle sling which came in the mail today, and now Im looking at their sale on a flashlight and rail adapter for 169 200 lumens for that price seems good, and it will use the same batteries as my eotech. SO I am going to keep my setup as is once I add the flashlight. I had thought about getting a Insight tech gear M6X that is a 125 lumen light and Laser illuminator that is going for 380, but Im going to look around and weight my options and not rush into anything. I was so excited when I first got my M+P 15 that I wanted to buy everything in the world right then and there to make it look more kewl, but you really have to take your time and make sure your decisions are based on being practical and weight is such an important part. Thank you all so very much for all your help and advice.....I knew this would be the right place to go for info!!!! Ive been a member of the East Windsor Sportsman Club for several years but was laid off of work and when it came time to send in my dues, I was two days late and they wanted to charge me 25 bucks more, and now the wife had to join the NRA as well as me.....and I just did not have the cash. I did recently sell a 71 colt python and a springfield armory XD45 in order to get the cash to make the deal I just did. The Rock River Arms Nation Match had a lead weight in the storage compartment of the butt stock but it had to have weighted 14 pounds with the 20 inch barrel and would have been no good to carry and I felt I was not shooting it ever more then 200 yards at any range, so I traded it in for a real nice tactical. I also will be getting the 5 "30" round clips from smith and wesson so that is worth another 100 bucks......so its like getting 800 for the RRA. I am Happy, and that is what counts. I feel I was treated very fairly by my dealor who now may have to sit on the weapons I gave them for awhile, and I got mine right away. Thanks so much to you all !!!!!!!!!!!! Mike |

If I may make one suggestion which I'm sure your already aware of. Before you make any more changes: Go out and shoot the hell out of it, then shoot some more and when your done you'll know what you want to do!! |

Not sure where you live in CT but one of my clubs in Southington has a 200 YD range. One of my AR15s has the 552 Eotech (NV sight) sight that runs AA batteries. The AA battery sight is the way to go, in my opinion. I use the surefire weapons light with a LT quick disconnect mount. Fast and bright. Don't go too big with the light, it adds too much extra weight.... My sights co-witness perfectly. (back up sights / Eotech 552 / PVS- 14 Night vision optic) This is a 16 inch Larue that I put together. GG&G back up sights with the Eotech 552. GG&G PVS14 mount and I modified another PVS14 mount to hold the Eotech 3X magnifier. The eye relief is exactly the same if I run NV or shoot in the daytime with the 3X magnifier. I don't shoot with the bipod because the fug (under rail grip) does the same thing (or use a 30 RD mag). Remember the more stuff you add makes them heavy to carry. This one is as heavy as my Garand rifle, but it can do things my Garand can't. The pics are old, the sling is different now, as I run a Vtac sling in the first pic, with the modified butt plate as shown in 2nd and 3rd pictures. The modified butt plate allows me to use the storage area in the butt. This will give you an idea of how my set up works. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v508/500magnumnut/LARUE%20TACTICAL/VICKINGSSLING.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v508/500magnumnut/LARUE%20TACTICAL/sling2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v508/500magnumnut/LARUE%20TACTICAL/sling1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v508/500magnumnut/LARUE%20TACTICAL/OS13.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v508/500magnumnut/LARUE%20TACTICAL/OS7.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v508/500magnumnut/LARUE%20TACTICAL/OS8.jpg can you give me the name of that sling and that front reaction site? sorry, I dunno the correct term. thanks mate |

I am glad you are happy but IMO if money is that tight, then you would be well served to do a lot more research here before you do any more purchasing.
Especially if you are paying $7.00 for a CR123 battery. Here is the first Google hit that has them for $1.00 - $2.00. Welcome to the sight. |

Hi Pain, That is a nice setup you have! I was wondering what type of compensator you have and if you went to JOJO's to get it installed? Thank you so much for your help and advice too!!! I have the FSC556 which cost 100 bucks. It's the best you can do here in CT. It's 98% flash hider but failed the BATFE requirements so it's officially called a break, which is legal here. I installed it myself as I do my own work on guns. |

thanks mate I use the Viking tactics sling. http://www.vikingtactics.com/prod_sling_VTAC-MK1-a.html There are many ways to attach it to a rifle. They sell quick disconnect mounts which makes it easy to remove when you need it out of the way. The upper on my rifle is a Larue Tactical and the quick disconnects come standard on that one. |

WOW, that's a lot to take in! First, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, congrats on your new AR! That's the only part that really matters.
Just a couple things, and you can tell me to blow it out my ass if you want....... First off, I'd keep the EO. As you found out, some come with built-in risers and some don't. I've got a couple 557s (with the riser) and I like the lower 1/3 co-witness. The front sight just barely peeps up into the sight picture, but that's why I have the EO there! As far as batteries.....I don't know where you're shopping, but my gun store sells 'em for $2 a pop (Surefire). It's a far superior battery to the AA. I just picked up another EO XPS because of the single 123 battery. I don't know your intended use, and don't take this wrong, but is the Harris Bipod for tacticool-ness? Fighting carbines aren't usually the place to hang a gangly/springy/2-legged thing on the front. The only bipod I have is on my .308 SASS. Just seems kinda counter-intuitive on a carbine, especially with the CQB stuff you have. As far as a light, all I run is regular Surefire 6P's with a Malkoff drop-in LED and (on some) a Surefire tailcap with the pressure pad (plug-in), stuck in LaRue QD light mounts. Plenty-o-light, same CR123 batteries and bulletproof. I do have a 600 Lumen drop-in and bezel adapter on backorder with TNVC, which should melt faces (if the Unobtanium bezel ever comes in). Just my opinion (worthless), but I'd try to "back 'er down a little" and simplify your set-up just a bit. It's hard with all the cool stuff out there, but I've got a giant box of "cool stuff" that I bought early-on, and now just sits in the box. As far as the deal you made, like I said......if you're happy, I'm happy. You were there, I wasn't. If the EO and other stuff was included in the trade, then OK. But if you traded 3 rifles, a handgun AND $1,000 bones for just the M&P, well......... If nothing else, they owe you some damn ammo!!!!!!!! Of course, if the trade guns had little or no value to you, then what-the-hell, you got what you wanted. I've traded off shit for next-to-nothing just because I didn't want to fuck with it. Welcome to the AR Club! Shoot on, shooter!!!!!! |

Look before you leap...... I have not moved a muscle towards my keyboard to buy anything else, I am not running to Cabelas to look at stuff (although I may buy a 50% off camelback uproar pack for 50 bucks after I look at it. I am very comfortable at the total deal I made, and am glad that I now re-joined on here once again for advice. I so appreciate the help that your all giving me and I cant tell you how much I applaud your expertice as I am sorta green. ((( I shot expert in the Army back in 72 and Im a good shot now, just cant see what im shooting anymore))). I have decided not to get the Mako trigger flashlight holder or the harris bipod. Weight is such an important factor, and Im not going to do much at all on my own, when I can ask experienced people like you and learn from your mistakes. Now if only my 19 year old would say the same thing to me. http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=159353 I found the Guru of flashlightdom (imho) and never learned so much about flashlights in my life. I think there may have been links here that I followed and learned so much. So now that I have all this knowledge, how come im still so confused???? I had gone to the Viking Tactics site and put in all of the info and only had to press the button to order a Viking Tactics Surefire L4 light that is 120 lumens (they mention 200, but that may not be output) and a sidemount holder for 169 for the combo. As I started looking around more, I saw the Pelican M6 3W 2390 180 lumens for 91.00 at optics planet Im not sure where the Pelican is made, but I do like to keep Americans working, and so I know I have to spend a little more to do so. I felt the best flashlight that I found in my hours of searching (but it was made in China) was the Fenix TK12 R5 multi mode 280 Lumen that had 4 modes of lumens. They wanted 77 bucks for that and 37 for the side mount and 19.95 for the switch. If surefire wants 110 for a switch and china wants 20, I guess if my life depended on it, I know which way I think I should go. The Viking Tactics back button was so close to my foregrip that I would think my thumb would be ok for now, and if I did go that way, would I have to change my GripPod foregrip that I have now, or just stickey tape it on???? I was also wondering about my back S&W handle.....I can get a plug to store batteries for the Flashlight and EOTech in there?????? I dont know how long the sale will be on the VT surefire L4 combo, but Im not going to rush and be unhappy. Thank you all so much for your welcomes and your advice.....I appreciate it so much. Oh....the guns I traded in....Except the RRA NM, I have not used any of them in over 6 years and they are just taking up room in my safe. |
|
Hi RetLawman! I traded in the guns and then later on here mentioned what I got and what I paid and I felt I made out ok. I did not get raped like I did in the past. I really got a good laugh out of your Box of stuff you bought and Im the same way with computers I own 5 and have tons of left over parts from others Ive built myself. Never have too many parts !!!! I originally was looking at the MP15 that was just a plane jane for 995, but it had reg sights and no floating barrel and I knew I would want to add a quad rail and other things to make it look kewl, and when I found that other places were asking 1500 and more for what I paid 1379 for, I knew I was better off not getting the EOTech G23FTS right away, and spending the money on the upgraded FT model as the troy sights and battle rail are worth more then 450 bucks if bought separately. I had a nice person who is a dealor see what I did and He felt I made out just fine, so I am very happy and will just slow down for now ((except the flashlight......That I really want for now)). Thank you so much for your welcome and your advice !!!!!!!!!!! Everyone here has been pretty nice. |

So many great pictures and the part in the front that I want to see the most ((your FSC556)) is always just out of view !!!! That you did the work yourself is very interesting. As an Electrician I have worked with rigid pipe and used hand tools to cut and thread pipe, and Im wondering how far off of using a vice and some oil with the hand dies is the job????? I had looked at the Troy Medieval Muzzle Brake for 44.99, but was only looking at it from a battering ram perspective, not realizing anything could be better as more of a legal flash suppressor which is so much of better use. I had also looked at a Patriot Ordnance Factory Triple Port 3 chamber muzzle Brake POF-USA .223 and had not looked into any specs or comparisons within different companies. I will go to the website for the FSC 556 right after I send this to you! Thank you so much Pain !!!!!!!!!!!!! I dont see how to upload pictures???? |

Yes yes I did !!!! I had not used the pistol (Ruger Single Six with a hogue grip) or two of the old long guns ( ruger 10/22 and a Mosin Nagant from 1943) in over 4-5 years and they were just taking up space in my safe. The RRA National Match must have weighted 14 pounds or more with the lead weight in the storage compartment meant for lead weight in stock, and I wanted a tactical weapon that would be good to have if the SHTF and I had to bug out. With all the stuff I got for the money I paid, I feel it was a good deal for me and the dealer just got themselves a good customer when I need some things. I am not going to buy anything more except a flashlight and Im trying to make a good decision on that. http://cgi.ebay.com/Surefire-M951-XM07-KIT02-Flashlight-AUTHENTIC-/280502795798?cmd=ViewItem&pt=US_Flashlights&hash=item414f44fe16 seems like a good deal????? Yes Yes I DID !!!! And Im Happy too !!!!!!!!!!! http://file:///C:/Users/Core-i7/AppData/Local/Temp/moz-screenshot-1.png |

I ordered the M951 flashlight with the XMO7 Duel Switch and wire that you use to turn on, and it comes with a FM63 Infrared filter, and a M49 duel thumscrew mount all for 165 plus 6 bucks shipping. He raised the price to 195 + as soon as I ordered mine. Looking at his list of sales, some people got em for 157 but most paid the same 165 that I did. IM happy it has the 123 batteries, and I can order the P61 lightbulb to get it from 65 lumens to 120, but I figured I wait and see how the 65 does in a mirror as far as blinding someone. I was looking at ammo and the bulk stuff at Cabela's is wolf and some name with an H that I would not shoot out of my 15ft. Remington good stuff was 200 rounds for 95 plus tax and I felt that wasnt the best I could do. I have about 1400 once fired brass, and a RCBS turret reloader and I was looking at the lee 3 die set for 34 bucks and thinking I should just start reloading my own and it will shoot better too, and be much cheaper! Thanks everyone, I do so much appreciate all your help. Mike |

Thanks Everyone !!!!!!!!! Well again i ended up doing something that may have not been a good thing. I had asked on here about flashlights and waited for someone to answer me back and THEN i found the section here that deals with lights and lasers. I ended up buying the M951 XM07 Kit02 with the red inferred filter and pressure switch for 165.00 and then I find out its only an incandescent bulb. I ordered the TNVC Q5 6P bulb, so I will be going from 65 lumens to 220 lumens and the batteries will last me hours longer as a LED is so much better on CR123 batteries. So 227 is what I will have invested with shipping for the whole flashlight. I saw where a Fenix TK12 R5 280 lumens for 77 bucks would have been everything I would have wanted, but I did not have the heart to put a china product on my ALL AMERICAN MADE rifle! |

Welcome to the forum. I shot expert with the M-16 back in '72, as well––before going to SEA. As an Air Force Aviator, we all had to qualify even though our chances of using the rifle were remote, at best. Next time I shot one was about a month ago when I bought my Doublestar M-4. Lots of fun, although I'll always primarily be a handgunner, and I should have gotten one years ago.
I don't think you did badly on the trade-ins. The shop is going to make a profit, that's why they're in business, but the price you got sounds fair and if you're happy, it was. You did kind of rush into accessories––I'm biding my time with the optic I'll ultimately get, but like shooting iron sights best anyway. Enjoy your new toy, and there is a lot of good advice on this forum I've found. You can learn a lot. |
