Starting with the MK12 concept, which modifications would
you make to build an accurate rifle for 500 yd shooting of
handloads with heavy projectiles?

Additional weight and length are acceptable.

Mod 0 or Mod 1? It's pretty damn good as it is. I would maybe go with an upgraded trigger such as a geisselle 2-stage, a sierra precision SPR grip, and a PRS stock, or some sort of adjustable cheek-weld stock. The 18" barrel is just fine, and if you get a properly spec'd and turned douglas blank, it will be just as good as anything else. Maybe get an 18" WOA stainless barrel, but I dont even think thats much better...

I would chamber it in something like 224 AR or 6mmAR Turbo 40. Although a stock mk12 mod X is well capable at shooting at 500 yards.

yesterday, with my mk12mod0 clone at 300m, using Gp90 ammo, I made a 5 shot group within 2.5 inches, which is sub MOA... conditions were good.

Seems accurate enough to me !

(barrel is a colt Match HBAR 1/7 that was shortened to 18", trigger is standard, with a home trigger job, glass was a 3.5-10x40mm)
