Are all Mil Spec receiver extensions the same?  I know the diameter is different from the commercial sized tubes, but is there any diiference between the Mil Spec's themselves?  I was particulary curious about the DSA tubes for $20 at Aim.  I think that I read that they were made from an extrusion.  Is that different from how the Colt and/or BCM tubes are made?

There might be very slight variances between the different manufacturers but they would be just that...very slight.

I think the DSA ones for around $20 are 6061.  Original mil-spec I believe is supposed to be 7075, which is harder than 6061.  Other than material and a perhaps a few dimensional differences (length of threads at front & amount of chamfer at rear), I don't know what makes a Vltor tube cost $45.

I remember reading somewhere around here some time ago that BCM ,or someone, offered a forged receiver extension (buffer tube), which was discussed as being significantly stronger than the extruded type.  That would certainly account for a difference in price.

I'll try to contact BCM and see what they say.

Another minor difference....  Colt extensions are 4 position. Vltor extensions are 5. The ones sold by Bravo are 6.

7075-T6 is triple the cost of 6061 and is much tougher to machine resulting in a higher cost part.

tensile strength of 7075T6 = 83000psi
tensile strength of 6061T6 = 45000psi

The only differences I can think of I've seen are material, finish as in type of annodising, number of positions (4, 5, 6) and the finish of the inside.  Some makers don't smooth out the inside of the tube nearly as much as others, so they are noisier and rougher feeling when you pull the bolt to the rear.

Yes there are some differences.

Note there is a difference between a receiver extension made to the mil-spec and one that is 'mil-spec' diameter.

Some differences are not important (like number of detents, numbering the detents, or logos on the aft size).  The potentially important differences (materials, methods, and finishes) are not readily apparent to the eye.

This, you get what you pay for.

Here is a quote from Bravo Company:

"Milspec receiver extentions are machined from 7075T6 Impact extrusions, they are not forged.
No such thing as a milspec forged receiver extension.

An impact extrusion is NOT the same as an extrusion."
