I'm going to build a BCM rifle & need advice. Should i get a carbine length upper or a mid length with 16 inch barrel ? I want an m4, any advice on which upper ?  What lower would be good ? I have between $ 1000/1300 to spend on complete rifle, can it be done & still have a quality gun ? Should i scrap this & get a Yankee Hill black diamond ?

16" barrel - midlength gas system.

Lower - DSA has a great deal on stripped blems.

YHM uppers are nowhere near BCM on quality nor does YHM CS rival BCM CS. Yes, I've spent thousands on YHM products.

I'd get the 16" midlength lightweight when they come back in stock, or pick up the one with the VTAC handguard now - it's incredibly light.

By putting stuff together on BCM's website I just made a 16" mid length complete for $1180 before shipping

Excellent choice considering BCM, you can have a quality rifle for well within you price range.

Might as well go with a complete BCM lower, and one of the following uppers:

14.5" M4 w/ Perm Attached A2X

16" M4

16" Mid-Length

Be just be sure to add the BCM BCG and CH option to the upper order.  Then just pick a rear sight and handguard and you have a quality rifle.

You may also want to consider this Spikes rifle, seems to be the best deal out there right now:

I shoot 55gr thru my 1/7 barrels all day long, as do many others.  I just realized that BCM lowers seem to be out of stock everywhere, perhaps consider building your own lower.

DSA also has a very good price on complete lowers with collapsible milspec tubes.

+1.  DSA's $200 complete lower + Spikes or BCM upper and you've got one hell of a rifle at a VERY good price.  Spikes will give you the cheaper price at comparable if not the same quality.

If building a short barreled rifle (less than 16" barrel and stock) you will have to pay the ATF first then be approved.  However I dont believe AL allows SBRs at this time.  You could build an AR pistol which has a shorter barrel, but no stocks allowed.

It's not a permit ––- it's an ATF-approved Form-1. Go to the "Armory" section and then "General Class 3" forum of this website for more info. Simultaneous possession of a short upper and AR15 could get you into a lot of trouble unless you've jumped through the NFA hoops.

First, you need to find out whether your state even allows short barreled rifles.

I just checked those out.  How can DSA sell a complete lower for $200 when their stripped lowers are $140?  What's the catch?

If you stick with BCM, you are getting a VERY high quality upper and lower.  YH isn't on the same level as BCM.

If you are still kicking around carbine vs midlength, figure that out first, then start dialing in your choices from there.  The extra sight radius, and longer gas tube make for a slightly better upper if everything else is equal, but of course "better" is a relative term, and a BCM carbine isn't going to short change you at all.

Here is a picture of a BCM Midlength with a 14.5" barrel and perm attached FS (making a legal 16" OAL).  Granted, this one has a DD Lite rail installed, bit it gives you an idea of one BCM option.
