Friday was beautiful, took a vacation day and went to the range!

After around seventy rounds of short auto bursts,
my bolt broke in two,  at the hole where the key fits.

I bought this bolt from Bushmaster around eight years ago.
It went into a mostly Bushmaster with a RDIAS, and has
been through approximately 35,000 rounds.

This rifle has been resonably well look after, though occasionaly
"rode hard, and put up wet".
The other parts of this rifle show no signs of faultering,
degradation or loss of accuracy.

Is this a reasonable life span for a bolt?

Thanks,
L

Beyond reasonable.  Rifle or Carbine?  Most guidance says 25K or less, and that is for light use in a rifle length gas system.  You can go far lower in round count, depending on the quality of the bolt and how hard it is used.

It was a full length with a heavy barrel the first two years,
then was converted to a carbine with a light sixteen inch barrel.

I don't think it played a part, but, this barrel is too light for
a full auto, gets very hot very fast.

35K and FA, I'd say you got your money's worth out of that one.

Thanks for the feed back guys!
I feel better now, ordered a new bolt
(and a spare) from Bushmaster.

i  agree..

Quite so. M4A1 bolt life expectancy is well under 10k when fired solely on auto.

35K , I would say you for sure got your money out of that bolt!! So much for Bushmasters not making past the 5000 round mark, lol!!!

He said it was a Bushmaster. Unpossible!

How can this be?! Bushmaster's non MPI'd bolts break after only a couple hundred rounds all the time at rifle courses!

My BM bolt's been working great too.

The carbine gas system can be violent.. no doubt about that!

Looks like this, doesn't it?
It's a known failure point on the platform that's even gotten a lot of official attention...and I wonder if anyone bothers to keep a round count on USGI platforms and swap bolts well before they get into probable failure counts.

I learned it's a good idea to keep a couple of spare bolts around, just in case.
Along with spare firing pins, fp retaining pins, lotsa other spare parts too.

How much does a RDIAS cost?  Don't you need to put a full auto FCG and bolt carrier in your rifle to get it to work?  Does possession of a legal DIAS protect you from "constructive intent" prosecution?

It looks exactly like that

The RDIAS cost $5,000, but that was years ago, I think they are twice that now.

I did need to use a full auto FCG and bolt carrier.

The auto sear it's self is registered, so it's all legal.

'I don't think it played a part, but, this barrel is too light for

The Army recently discovered the same thing after only 45 years of using the 'Government Profile' barrel. They are notoriously slow learners.

Bet yours looks like this.....

This is a Colt bolt with approximately 20K rounds in an M231 FPW.

I think you should call Bushmaster and ask them to replace it.

Yup, 35k is pretty good for a 'hobby' gun.

A bolt should last 87 rounds

little bit of JB Weld and that'll be good as new and ready to rock.

Good for you buddy! 35,000 rounds far exceeds the expected life for these things.

Now I'm feeling kind of stupid, for not having look
into this long before the bolt broke!

To be proactive.....inspect your bolt at least once per year & look for minute indications of a crack forming around the cam pin hole and at the base of the two locking lugs on each side of the extractor. The cam hole failure immediately puts your rifle out of action, so I pay more attention to this detail.
