Alright I'm going with a 14.5 by CMMG but I cant make up my mind between a carbine length or Middy. Any advatages or disadvantages to one or the other?
I might be dreaming but I thought I read on here that the Middy has a longer gas tube and a "smoother" recoil impulse, making for better follow up shots??? Iv only dealt with carbine length in the Marines. So I'm a newb to the middy concept, please educate me. Please help, I'm tearing out what little hair I have left over this!!! |

The middy has a 9" gas system making it 2" longer than the carbine. The smoothness is really subjective to the shooter, however I think my middy is smoother than my carbine length. Personally l like the middy over the carbine, it seems to offer more advantages (smoother, theoretically "easier" on the internals, longer sight radius, etc.) over carbine with no disadvantages. ETA: I like the 14.5 middy as well |

thanks for the info. I cant remember if I was ever taught about a "longer sight radius." What is the advantage to that? A longer sight radius allows for more precise sight picture alignment. i.e. a midlength gas system is 2" longer than a carbine gas system putting the front sight two inches further out. Of course this only applies if your using the standard front sight block. |

Ok, so ive decided on the middy. Now if I go with the railed front gas block. what kind of rail would you guys recommend that wont break the bank? Are you talking about a railed gasblock or a railed handguard. Im not a fan of a railed gasblock, and if you want a rail get a low profile gas block that will fit under a free floating rail of your choosing so that essentially the rail goes past and over the gasblock. As far as rails go Im partial to Larue, but Daniel Defense and Troy make quality rails as well. |
