I just ordered a flat top upper and one of those ion bond bolt carrier assemblies from BCM this morning.

I want (want, but may have to settle for something else) a 16" light weight/skinny/pencil barrel with a mid length gas tube, not the carbine length and chrome chamber/bore.  So far I'm finding not a lot of offerings in that combination.  We'll see.

Still haven't decided on the standard front sight or a flip up/with gas block.  I do know I want a free float tube, too.

We'll see.  Maybe next month (payday at a time, or maybe every other payday) I'll find/order a barrel.

over a year ago, i bought a complete upper w/pencil barrel at the Indy 1500 gunshow from model 1 sales.  I've since sold it, but you might try their website for a barrel.

There aren't a lot of midlength lightweight (0.60") barrels out there.  I got a complete midlength lightweight upper from CMMG a few years (It looks like they don't offer them anymore).

Its nice and light, but if you're planning to have a rail, and any kind of accessory, you'll likely never notice the difference in weight to a normal barrel (0.75").  You'll have way more options with a 0.75" midlength barrel.

I helped my buddy build a 16" midlength upper, using a Operator barrel from denny's guns (globaltactical.com).  Its got a 12" LT rail (or 13.2" - can't remember).

My lightweight middy:

I like the looks of the second one.  That's what I'm trying to put together.  Hope mine comes out looking that good.

What kind of front sight is that?

My lightweight and my buddies (the 2nd picture) are both as accurate as I can tell with iron sights.  Both are 1/7 twist, and they both shot everything we have fed 'em.  All reloaded ammo, from 55 gr fmj/sp to 77 gr OTM and everything in between.  I think the Operator barrel will be more accurate considering the free floated barrel, and I think the quality of the barrel is better.

I like the lightweight setup, but its also just an extra gun for me.  I primarily carry and shoot my 11.5" sbr.  If I was gonna have a 16" midlength as my primary I'd probably go with a BCM, Operator (GTS), Recon (GTS), and from there the list goes on and on.  My biggest preference is for 1/8 or 1/7 twist, so I have no issues stabilizing 75 gr loads, which is 90% of what I shoot.

I just couldn't wait.  You know how it is.  Before I knew it the CC was in my hand and I was typing on the keyboard.

I ordered from PK Firearms.

One Rock River Arms 16" lightweight mid-length chrome lined barrel, one gas tube roll pin, one midlength gas  tube, and one forged charging handle with Badger Ordnance Gen
I Tactical Latch.

Waiting on them now....

congrats, sometimes waiting on the parts is harder than making the decision

Got the barrel, charging handle, gas tube/pin in the mail this morning.  Quick service/shipping.

The dang front sight base doesn't have the sight in it but that's okay.  I've already ordered the parts (about $5 or so).

I got it down to the shed, knocked the pins out of the fsb and then tapped it off the barrel (off the high spots anyway) with a soft faced hammer and got the un-needed front handguard retainer and barrel nut off the barrel, sprayed some oil on it and put it in the cabinet till the other parts come it.

I thought I had a free float tube for it already but it seems last year when I got this idea I ordered a carbine free float tube and then later decided on a barrel with a mid-length gas system after doing some reading here.  Oh well, I'll put the carbine length free float tube on my S&W M&P 15 and then redo the camo job.

Can't wait to take it to the range and try it out.

Well, that YHM free float tube came in this morning.  I have a question about the flash suppressor.  It lines up perfectly by snugging it up by hand.  Will that crush washer allow another full turn or should I be looking for another spacer to go in there with the crush washer so i can get the flash suppressor on tight and correctly timed?

Well, the free float tube came in last Thursday morning, the front sight/spring/pin yesterday and the SUIT mount today.

It's all together.  Prior to the SUIT and mount it was 6 lbs. even (not counting a loaded magazine).  I need to weigh it again with the SUIT, mount and a loaded 30 round magazine just for the record.

The butt stock had a plastic (glass reinforced nylon???) butt swivel on it.  Guess what?  An M1/M14 butt swivel (forced into the slot) has the same threads as the allen screw that held the plastic butt swivel in) has the same threads so replacing the plastic one with a metal butt swivel was easy and now I can put the sling on it the way I'm "used" to doing it.

I'll need to hit the range this weekend to sight it in with the SUIT and the irons.

I do need to modify the SUIT base/mount a little.  One side is notched out for the spring that is on the SUIT latch but for some reason the other side of the mount doesn't have a corresponding notch so I'll have to get the dremel out and notch it.  I like to never got the SUIT on it due to the angle it went on at where the spring was hitting the spot where the notch should have been.

M1 steel butt swivel fits.

close up of the SUIT/mount showing the notch on the left side of the mount to clear the spring on the SUIT latch.  The right side is missing that notch.  With the latch locked down the spring clears the mount but during removal/installation it has to tilt/twist off to the left for the spring to clear the mount.  A little dremel time and some flat black paint should take care of that.
