How can a person determine if his AR-15 has a .223 or 5.56 chamber ???  The barrel is not marked at all as far as I can see.  TIA

That's odd that the barrel is not marked with the caliber. Every gun I've ever owned has had the caliber marked on the barrel. Check the top of the barrel near the flash suppressor, that's where my Colt LE6920 is marked. It's also on my receiver.

If it isn't marked I would assume it is 223, it is better safe than sorry!

I have a M4 upper that came from Model 1 Sales, all it is stamped is" M1S 1-9" and so I only run .223 in it to be safe.

Many unmarked barrels out there.  I have one that is 223 and it pisses me off.....they originaly told me it was a 5.56

Check :

http://www.m-guns.com/tools.php

There are cross sections of a 5.56 and 223 chamber.  The 5.56 has a longer leade...you can see it in the picture.  If you open your AR and take the bolt out and look down the barrel from the chamber end on an angle you can actually see the leade if you have a 5.56 chamber.

If you are pissed off about it ADCO can check out and ream your chamber to 5.56 if you want for $30 or so

The seller of the rifle claims it is a 5.56 chamber. I have some doubts. I did fire some Winchester White Box 5.56 ammo and it fired just fine.  Just wondering if there is an inexpensive way  to verify it.

The only "gauge" I know of is to run the reamer in the chamber.  If it cuts then you were not 5.56.

If you have a 5.56 and a 223 barrel you can look at, you will be able to tell the difference by eye.  Hell, if I can do it anyone that can see can probably do it.

You can get away with shooting 5.56 ammo in a 223 chamber but it is not recommended.  So, even if you put some 5.56 down the pipe that does not mean you have a 5.56 chamber.

Sir....If the builder of the gun claims it is 5.56 would you take it as the truth ??? What made you suspect your gun was not 5.56 ???

So....Can I use my Mini-14 chamber in 5.56 as a comparison to my AR-15 ???

I don't know about Mini 14s.  Have heard they have 5.56 chambers but I don't know for sure....are you getting a deal on this upper or something?

I understand that although a manufacturer may mark their barrel 5.56, it may still be 223? Is that correct? or is it against the law to do such a thing?

They fucked up other stuff when they built my upper and since the barrel was not marked I wanted to check up on it.  It was built by some fuckups in Florida when I lived there a while ago.

Also, there is a marking on the lower on the mag well. Which one if either has to be marked correctly? I would assume the barrel. Does the barrel on an AR contain the chamber or does the upper? As you can tell I don't know anything about ARs.

Chamber is part of the barrel. If the barrel is marked 5.56 NATO, then it is 5.56. If it's marked incorrectly then I would contact the maker. But then I wouldn't concern myself that much with it unless you plan to shoot a boatload of 5.56.
Like someone else stated. You can have it reamed to 5.56 or better yet, a Wylde chamber.

Ok. Now that I think about it, that was probably a dumb question. The chamber is probably part of the barrel on all guns?

The correct marking will be on the barrel.  Many have said that some barrels are marked wrong.  This goes both ways as I am told.  Some barrels marked 223 are really 5.56 and some marked 5.56 are 223 due to a fuckup.

One could make a chamber cast with Cerrosafe (available from Brownells and Midway), then measure with a micrometer.  Then you would know for sure.

Not a hard process, and the Cerrosafe can be saved and used again and again.
