Mine don't.  They unscrew enough to remove the Carry Handle from the rail then they come to an abrupt stop.  They are swaged or something.

They're designed to not be removable.

You can remove them.Unscrew them by hand until it stops then get a flat head screwdriver and take them off from there.I think they were designed so you can't do it by hand.Probably so Joes wouldn't start messing with them and losing the knobs.

I have heard some of the thumb screws are staked on somehow. You "may" foul the threading by taking a screw driver to get them all the way off. I have never tried though.

I've never heard of any being staked.I've only done this with military carry handles though.Im pretty sure you could tell if the knob was staked or not.OP what is the Forging mark on your carry handle?

Colt, Bushmaster and I believe ArmaLite carry handle screws come off easy. I saw a UTG that was staked.

It has a keyhole forge mark with a number "4".

My Bushy ones don't come off.  They are only designed to be "loosened" and that is it.  The ends of the bolts are "swedged", "peened" if you will as to not allow removal and LOSS of the nuts.

+1 This is what I was getting at earlier.

My Bushmaster carry handle screws come off easy, the shaft ends are not peened.  Guess BM has used different CHs over the years.
