What ammo is best to use for the initial zeroing of an AR? Should one use practice ammo or PD ammo? Seems to me if you get a zero from the practice ammo then the PD ammo should be right on since it is better. I am new at this so please take it easy on me. Thanks in advance for replies

Hunting rifle/target rifle - the ammo you will use to hunt or shoot with.

Duty or range plinker - any quality brass 5.56 will do fine.

What is this rifle going to be for? 99% of the time you need to use the ammo that you will be using for the purpose of the rifle. Don't zero it with a 55 grain bullet and a hot load if your going to be hunting with a 65 grain bullet with a medium load. Feel free to experiment with ammo, but zero with what you will be using.

use the ammo you plan on shooting through it the most.

The rifle will be used for self defense and range practice from 25 out to 200 yards, for self defense I have some Hornady TAp 60 gr on the way. Just ordered 2 20 round boxes to try out. I also ordered 100 rounds of Hornady 55gr steel cased training ammo. On hand I have some Monarch 55 gr 20 rounds of steel and 20 rounds brass, 20 rounds remington PSP 55 Gr soft point and about 80 rounds of Remington UMC 55 gr FMJ. So I assume that I should wait until the Hornady TAp comes in and zero wiht that. And just shoot the rest for fun.

Prvi M193 gives me a consistent 3 MOA 50-yard zero.  TAP moves the POI about .75" up and .50" right at 100 yards.  I can live with that.

I was considering using Wolf to get a basic zero down. If you can get it close with .22 per round ammo, you will waste fewer round of expensive ammo getting it locked in. So for me, it will be Wolf followed by my HD/SHTF ammo. Funny thing is my HD ammo moves slowly enough there shouldn't be too much POI change b/t the two. Do what you like. I agree you should zero your rifle to your specific purpose and the specific loading for that purpose.

If it will be your main SD gun, sight it in with that load. And practice with whatever. If it's range gun sight it in with Wolf or whatever you want.

It's easy. Zero it with what you have. But, before you depend on it for more than a ranger plinker, makes sure it is dead on with the ammo you will use for HD or Patrol.  Unless you have a large amount of the ammo you will depend on, this is the easiest way and has worked for me.
