My selector was feeling really rough and gritty, so I decide to shell out $25 for a high quality Colt selector from the guys at SAW.  I was really surprised when I opened the package.  The thumb lever is really long and mounts past the center of rotation of the selector.  So, I took some measurements, and I took some pictures:

As you can see from the pictures, the lever on the new Colt selector is 0.15 inches longer than the standard selector.  The guys at Specialized Armament told me that this was a new Colt design.  With more metal overlap, it was designed to be more robust.  Apparently, there have been some instances of the lever breaking off.  I don't think that's going to be a problem with the new design!  They said that Colt is going to start shipping out their products with this new selector.

The operation is really smooth, but not as smooth as the selector that came with my LMT Defender.  That's as smooth as butter!  I wanted to buy an LMT selector, but they're not available unless you get the ambi.  Speaking of ambidextrous, in the first pic, note the machined groove on the rotating surface on the lever side.  You can install the Colt selector on either the left or the right side of the receiver.

I've had it for a few weeks now, but I'm still not used to looking at it.  To me, it looks a little funny.  Your thoughts?

They've been out for some time it seems.  My police surplus 6520 came with one.

Hmm, so how "new" is new?  Lima Tango/Trident, how long have you had those 6520s with the "new" selectors?

The Colt selector feels pretty smooth, and snaps into place nicely.  Again, not as smooth as my LMT.  I don't own a Colt lower, and I never really paid attention before when shooting a Colt AR.  I have two other lowers that had RRA LPKs.  One is okay, and the one I replaced sucked.  I guess when it comes to selectors, YMMV.  Nobody pays attention to them unless they're really bad, or if they break.  I've never heard of one breaking...

I bought a 6920 last July and it has the "new" style selector on it. I hate it. Its tip rubs against my Hogue grip and you can feel the resistance as it hits it every time. My other non Colt AR has the other style and doesn't touch its Hogue grip. I have contemplated trimming the grip a bit but still haven't taken a knife to it.

Mine too, bought my Mt6400 Match Target M4 last summer and it has the new selector.  I'll probably get the ambi w/ the right side cut away though, that's what I'm putting on my 2 new NOVESKE's i'm building, GIDDY GIDDY GIDDY!!!

*edit*
My OAL is no longer from center than the old selector......

The overall length of the Colt selector is not any longer than a "regular" one. Your grip is too wide.

thats been around a while dude.
also it can be used as a right or lefty, very easy to switch it over for left hand use

I like that selector, my small pin 6920 came with one.  The longer section gives more leverage, it is much easier to silently move the selector from one position to the other.

I won't buy one because it's ugly

That being said, I've noticed that selector on a lot of the newer Colts I've seen. I actually like it. I don't see its advantages, but I do like it.

Oh, snap!  Now you've done it!

Now that I've looked at it more, it is kind of ugly

I like the new selectors - in fact I just ordered two of them from Brownells:

Colt Selectors

They are smooth, and as mentioned above they are reversible for lefties.

So are we.
I can see where this may help some activate the selector a little easier.

This problem is not the fault of the Colt selector. I've seen it a number of times from a variety of manufacturers. Most recently on 2 Rock River carbines as arrived from the factory, I've also seen it on Stag. I know for a fact that this isn't the case on all RR's with a Hogue. Instead of cutting the Hogue grip with a knife use a Dremel with a fiber disk on it, mark the radius that the selector makes across the grip. The larger disks make a more appropriately sized half moon relief. Just use the side of the disc and carefully lower it on to the side of the Hogue grip. The relief doesn't need to be very deep. If you do this with caution, once you brush the burned rubber away it will leave a small half moon depression that looks like it was intended to be there. Interestingly several other manufacturers such as ERGO make this relief from the factory but Hogue does not. I don't really know who to blame in this situation but I believe the Hogue grips vary slightly in thickness, that and the mil spec selector leaning towards one extreme.

Sorry if I've pulled this thread too far off track but I believe plenty of members may run into this when using the Hogue grip.

RIF. More robust, and less prone to breakage as stated in the OP.
