It depends. Need more info to tell you what the "best" is. What do you want to use it for? What do you want to mount to it? How much do you have to spend?

I'm glad this thread was posted. I am looking at getting a Colt too. However Im not in Law Enforcement. Does that mean I can count out getting a 6920 Colt? :( If so what Colt is just as good as it?

The best looking, in my opinion, is the knight's RAS.

6920's are available for non-LE purchase. I believe the markings on the side are remnants of the ban era.

No, being leo has nothing whatsoever to do with owning a 6920, or 6721, or any similary leo marked Colts.

If you can own a gun, you can own a 6920.

eta,

I was speaking of 16" barreled colts without a happy switch.

You can get one as a non-LEO.

To the OP, yeah it all depends what you want it for. I like the DD Omega rail.

Thanks for clearing that up guys! I'm glad I found this out before I got a Match one. But I haven't seen a 6920 on any sites for sale other than Clyde's? And is there a better M4 Colt besides the 6920?

I want to mount an Eotech and some CQB atttire.  I really don't have a hard and fast budget, just don't want to spent another 1300.00 for extras aside from optics.  I have a ruger sr556 and really like the troy rails.  Just wanted to see what you guys were running on your Colts.

There are many choices, but the most popular is for many the KAC RAS just like the  military has been using and the DD omega rail that free float the barrel. Both install with no mods to the rifle.

I chose the KAC RAS. Easy to install, built very well and I felt it important to have a heat shield. KAC RAS has a heat shield while other eliminated shields.

I have the Daniel Defense Omega rails on mine.  I like them, lightweight, freefloat, easy to install, and no modification to the rifle needed.

On the other hand, have you considered a 6940? A couple hundred more, but comes with their monolithic type upper that has the integral free float quad rail.  Cost is less than a 6920 with a Troy of Daniel Defense rail, but more than YHM.  About the same as adding a MI rail.

Are you going to mount the EoTech onto the rail itself or just to the receiver?  Are you planning on adding a laser to the rail?  If not, you don't need rails that mount solidly like the Knights, DD, or any of those.  You can get the drop in ones for less, or even just get a Magpul MOE with a couple bolt on rail sections for a light and vertical grip if that's all you're adding.

Both the 6920 and the 6940 come with the markings you see here. As was mentioned, anyone who can possess an AR-15 can own one.

My Bushmaster has the, "For Government Use Only" markings also. They're quite common. Courtesy of Bill Clinton.

If you want free float you can;t go wrong with DD Omega.  If you want to save some money and don't care about free-float, I really like my Troy MRF-DI, it locks up rock solid.  MI also makes a drop-in rail for about the same cost, but I have heard many reports of them no being as solid, meaning they have some play in them simial to the standard plastic handguards.

This is my 6920 with Troy MRF-DI:

After watching the guys at Shooting USA do a DD Omega install and seeing how easy it was and that it bridges the typical delta ring gap I was going to go in that direction, but then I saw the 6940 on sale for only 100 more at Christmas and grabbed one. Other than the new barrel nut that colt has not released a wrench for, the 6940 is super sweet if you can get it for nearly the same price as the 6920.

For me the barrel nut thing is no big deal. When am I ever gonna need to get that barrel off where I would want to do it myself? I am just not "that guy"... yet. (Still a little new to BRD.)

I cannot find the link to that vid, but there are a few others out on youtube that show how easy it is. I will look some more nad if I find the vid I was talking about for hte DD Omega install I will add a link to this thread.

What are the major differences between the 6920 and the 6940 aside from the rails? Are the rails decent on the 6940.  The 6940 seems like the way to go.

Only difference is the monolithic rail with the flip up front sight. I like the 6920, more flexibility. 6940's a great gun too though.

Not to hijack, but has anyone bought the slightly blemished RAS from Knightarmco.com? I'm going to buy a 6920 and try to make it as much like my old M4 as possible, and 150 seemed like a good deal. Does "blemished" just mean scratched and whatnot? I don't want to buy one and find out it has broken rails..

The only Colt I own is a 6940 but I have LaRue rails on three of my other rifles and I am very pleased with them. You do have to install them but it is easy.

I like the DD omega best followed by the KAC M4 RAS on a 6920 as long as you plan on keeping the FSB. If you go low-pro I like the KAC URX the most. While the 6940 is an awesome rifle I don't like the front flip up site and inability to change the rifles configuration to my liking. However if you like the way its set up then its a phenomenal choice.

It really depends on what flavor you want. You want a military style look? Get yourself a KAC RAS. Lots of great manufacturers out there of rails. Do you want free float or not? For a carbine it doesnt really matter but its an option. Knights Armament really sets the standard that the rest of the industry tries to copy. Check out knightarmco.com for their latest gear.

Maybe a dumb question but I see the 6920 is a 16". Does that make it a midlength M4?

Negative.  The Colt 16" M4 profile barrel uses the same carbine length gas system found on a genuine 14.5" M4 barrel.  The extra 1.5" of barrel on the 16" barrel is added forward of the front sight base/gas block.

16" M4 profile

14.5" M4 barrel with carbine gas system

16" M4 profile barrel with carbine length system

I believe midlength refers to the gas system, not the barrel length.

I have a 6940 and I really like the mono upper. I have another rifle with a DD literail and I don't think there is anything out there that would make me want to take it off. they don't call it "literail" for nothing

I like the flip-up sight on my 6940 better than my Troy unit (no button, just flip up... flip down), but I'm not sure about the Matech yet. All peep sights give me a hard time as of recent. I think my eyes are getting bad

The Gas tube is different also, plus Colt hasn't released the tool for the Barrel nut inside the hand guard.

I do like my 6940 though

I've got the Omega 7.0 on my 6920. It's a great rail, certainly the best no-gunsmithing rail on the market. My only gripe is that I would prefer the rail to extend out around the FSB like the Omega X does, but installation on that is a pain compared to the 7.0 Omega.

The 6920 has a standard FSB, and the 6940 has a flip-up front sight.  I don't like the 6940 front sight, as it does not lock,  which is my main reason for not getting a 6940. The rails are nice though.
