Normally to get the safety out of the lower receiver you need to remove the grip, spring, and pin, and then the safety should slide right out right?  That's the advice I gave my buddy, but apparently he rotated the safety about half way and was able to tap the safety out without removing anything.  To reinstall he just pushed the pin down far enough to slide the safety back in... Is this normal??

100% normal yes..

sometimes, when the pin is very pointy and the spring powerfull it's not easy, but most of the time thats the way you do you, without removing pins..

And even if your spring is strong and your detent VERY pointy, you can remove the selector by just loosening the grip screw, and backing it out partway to take off some of the tension on the spring, without actually removing the grip, screw, spring or detent.

That is an easy way to remove an M16 selector because the channel is milled differently than and AR15 selectors channel. But the risk is great for what a transferable cost now. On a 16 selector just heavy thumb pressure against the selector while wiggling it can take them out sometimes.
There has been one post in the past where someone tried the tapping on the selector out while rotated partially and the inside wall of the lower broke out. If nothing else it could mess up the tip of the detent.

That's how I just did mine the other day (added an ambi). Worked like a charm.
