what's the difference between a nm bcg an a standard bcg? other than price, why not just a well made bcg? won't they both work as well?

Maybe weight

I remember a while back someone posed a question about a bolt carrier that claimed to be more accurate because it didn't contact the sides of the upper receiver as much as a normal bolt carrier. The general consensus was it was marketing BS.

It's BS.
Some offer them in varying weights with all kinds of claims about the outcome.
Best advice would be to get a FA BCG.
I'm sure others will disagree.  Might want to see what the NM shooters use.   You can get about two FA BCG's for the cost of one "NM BCG"
