Would this work or mess it up.
It will work very well. As part of my cleaning process, I normally flush the upper receiver, chamber, bore and gas tube with brake cleaner. Just make sure to apply CLP or an oil to any steel parts as the brake cleaner will pretty much strip any oil from the surface.
One minor word of caution... LMT applies some kind of lube or coating to the insider of their upper receivers and the outside of their receiver ext. tubes. Not sure exactly what it is but it's some kind of anti-friction coating. Anyway, if you have an LMT upper with this coating, brake cleaner will remove it. Not the end of the world but something to be aware of.
Chlorinated brake cleaner is bad for plastics; it doesn't hurt the metal of a receiver, nor should it hurt the anodized coating. But chlorinated cleaner is also pretty bad for breathing, so it's always a good idea to a) use non-chlorinated cleaners and b) use whatever cleaner you use in a very well ventilated area.
