Ok.. This is probably for a long ways out... but I eventually would like to build an SPR. I have a few questions for y'all.... 1. Stock: I probably will want a Fixed Stock... Choices between A1/A2/Sully/Entry Stock. Which do you think is best for an SPR? I personally keep my AR15 CAR Stocks usually at one click out or fully collapsed. Is a longer stock preferable for prone? Or should that not affect me much? I also don't want to spend a fortune on any gimmicky cheek-adjustable, LOP adjustable, stock... 2. Free Float Tube What companies do you suggest for a free float tube? What style of tube do you suggest? What length, assuming an 18" Barrel w/ Midlength gas system and no fixed front sight? I would assume midlength... but I'm curious if a Rifle length would fit appropriately on an 18"... I'm sure it would be. Keep in mind I would either like rails on it, or the ability to add rails to it. 3. Match Trigger or Regular Trigger Do you suggest a special Match Trigger set? Or should I just go Mil-spec on that... 4. Bipod Who makes a good, though reasonably priced bipod that would mount via Rails? 5. Barrel I'm pretty sure I want a 1/7 Twist fluted barrel... though a friend of mine went with 1/8 and I do see some people going with 1/8. If the primary purpose of the rifle is to shoot 75/77gr... I would assume 1/7 twist is still GTG. Besides my other AR15s (which are 16" M4gery Carbine configs), both have 1/7 twist.. I guess I just want confirmation that 1/7 twist is also gtg. Also... do they make 1/7 twist fluted barrels that aren't shiny Stainless steel? Or would it be advisable to buy a stainless steel 1/7 twist fluted barrel and just paint it myself... or is there some benefit to having the stainless steel left bare? Also... how difficult is it to add a barrel to an upper receiver? Does it require headspacing? How is headspacing done? What tools would be needed? Anyways... I think thats about it for my questions... Advanced apologies for my lack of knowledge in some of these questions... and I really look forward to all of your responses. Also if there are any other parts that you think are REALLY important that I may have left out... let me know. Im thinking that other than the things I've mentioned.. everything else on the gun will be mil-spec/OEM. |

1. It depends on your body geometry. A2 works for me
2. If you are going with a low profile gas block you can use any rail/tube longer than middy as it will cover it completely. Take your pick 9" (will show gas block), 10", 12" or even 13.2" (DD and larue) and 13.8" (troy) Keep in mind that with longer rails you are also adding weight which in this type of rifle is not necessarily a bad thing 3. I'm not into dual stage triggers and getting a trigger job on a standard trigger is always a cheap alternative. 4. Harris bipod with bipod mount 5. Quality barrel in 1:7 or 1:8 will work great and will allow you to shoot all kind of bullets that can be loaded to magazine length. Look at vendors like WOA, Noveske, Krieger and others You dont need to worry about headspace as this is set when installing the barrel extension to the barrel which is done by the barrel manufacturer. You would need a barrel wrench though ETA: Dont forget quality optics. Your budget should spend at least a 1/3 of the total on a quality optic |
| I just used a regular trigger out of the the lower parts kit I bought. Then I sent it off to Bill Springfield and for about $35 it turned into a very nice match trigger. I would rather spend the ~$100 I saved on getting a match 2 stage trigger and put that money into a better optic or barrel. |

I like the A1 stock, but it really does depend on your body and what fits you. You might go to a gun show and pick up a used A1 and A2 stock and then try both of them. Leave whichever one you like on it. I've got a YHM tube for mine, theyre decent quality and relatively inexpensive. Spikes tactical is supposed to be bringing a new lightweight rail to the market soon. If you want the best I would recomend Daniel Defense. Larue is another excellent option. Giessele triggers are probably the best, but pricey. Bill Springfield does an excellent trigger job for about $40. Harris builds decent bipods, Larue makes an excellent QD mount for them. Bobro builds really nice bipods, probably the best available, but theyre kinda high. WOA, Noveske, and Superior Barrels all have high quality offerings for SPR style builds. ADCO has recently brought out their own line of barrels and I'm sure theyre GTG as well. Personally I prefer a 1/7.75 or 1/8 twist barrel for 75 and 77gr loads. A 1/7 will work but I think 1/8 is a better match. AR barrels come headspaced with the barrel extension already in place. They slide in to the upper and you tighten the barrel nut anywhere between 30 and 80 ft lbs. Its very easy and about all you need is a barrel wrench, tourqe wrench, and barrel vise block or action block. (if your on a budget you can put a flat top upper reciever in sideways and use a piece or wood or leather on each side as a pad for the vice jaws. I did this before I bought a barrel block.) http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=2&f=142&t=142581 YHM rails http://dsgarms.com/index.cfm/category/111/rail-systems.cfm DD rails http://www.whiteoakarmament.com/ WOA barrels http://www.superiorbarrels.com/ http://noveskerifleworks.com/cgi-bin/imcart/display.cgi?cat=17 Noveske barrels http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/browse&category=ar15/m16_barrels Another good source for barrels. http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/browse&category=ar15/m16_replacementparts-lower_triggergroups Giessel and Bill Springfield triggers. |

Are Sabre Defense barrels any good? I've heard good things about them IIRC Also what about the Gas tube and other gas related parts? Could I get them from the same manufacturer as the barrel? |
