I'm building an A2 like I had in the Army and thought I remembered these being metal.  I also see these being sold as being plastic.  Where to find a metal one?

The only ones that should be plastic are the ones for Airsoft. Try DelTon or JSE or Midway.

I just ordered an Armalite delata ring assembly from DSGArms.  It is aluminum and looks quite sturdy.

Does anybody have a diagram and instructions on how these are assembled onto the barrel nut?

Look for an exploded diagram in one of the merchant suporters of this site.  Held together by a snap ring.  Pretty simple really.

Its profile looks like the letter D from the side as compared to the older flat slip ring.

Definition -something in the shape of a delta (Δ); specif., a tract of flat land, usually triangular.
Delta ring was first used for triangular hand guards.

No the triangular handguards used the flat "slip ring".

The Delta Ring was first used on the round handguards of carbines during the XM177 experiments.

This is one of those things, that if it wasn't called a Delta Ring, what else would you call it?  Handguard Retaining Cap?  Doesn't have the same ring to it.

Because it was a ring that you would pull back to slip off the handguards.  The flat slip ring was much more difficult to operate and remove the handguards with only 1 person, even with a buddy it was a PITA.
