Is $799 a good price for a new Stag Model 1?

Yes.
Never hurts to keep an eye out. I got a Colt 6920 for 1095 NIB with 80 rounds of PMC ammo and 2 free range passes.
I would take it if I were looking.

Wow! Im not experienced with AR's but I just ordered a stag model one yesterday from the gunshop in my PX.  Stag-arms.com wants 949$ for it, after a 15% fee I will pay around 1075$ for mine. Im deploying on Tuesday so I wont even get to play with it before I leave, but at least I'll have my trusty old Colt M16 A2, my wife will pick up my AR for me and it will be ready for R&R, lol.

probably their profit. They have to go through a distributer in Florida, so they say.

No.  They are just ripping you in the ass.  $949 is MSRP.  Almost nobody sells rifles for MSRP.  You should be getting that rifle for that, or less out the door with AR prices the way they are right now.
If you are deploying, I would just wait and have the wife continue to look around while you are gone.  When she finds the right deal, she can snatch it up.  I would say just wait until you get back from deployment so you can offer cash and maybe get a little lower price, but there might be some events happening soon that would drain the market and drive prices up again.  Then that would suck for you.

It isn't a Stag, but as an example.  A Colt 6721 usually went for about $1300 to $1400 a couple of years ago once all was said and done.  Last February, a local dealer wanted $1950 for one.  Just a few weeks ago, I got one for $1175 because demand has gone down so much.

thats exactly the problem, I dont want to get screwed and not be able to own a rifle once I get back. I havent payed them yet, I'll have cash on Friday. I ship on Tuesday. Maybe I can look around at some local shops this weekend. They said it wont arrive for 6 weeks anyhow. I really hope my VA check arrives on friday though, or else I could prolly order from downrange, its just my wife dosent really know how to go about making a weapon purchase. Thanks for the info, I really would like a colt, or better yet something from spikes.

P.S. I have read good things about Stag Arms though, what do you think?
