For those of you who have/do use the...whaddya think? How effective are they on braking and FH?  I don't necessarily need the FH, but I don't want mega-blastiness blowing back in my face, either. I've been thinking a lot about a Recce build...but am leaning towards an accurized 20" build...this one will be used specifically for pest control (woodchucks all the way up to yotes...possibly even a whitetail now and then). For that reason, a brake-ish type barrel device sounds like a good choice as it will aid in quick follow ups (when necessary). Since it will be on the end of a 20" barrel I'm thinking the blast-back from a brake might not be as bad.

Is the FSC 556 a good choice or is there better? Oh, yeah, no $400 triple taps for me....I'm thinking around $100 max on budget. Thanks guys!!

I have FSC556's on all my 223 ar's.  You can look through the forums and see many people recommending the FSC556.  The blast is not horrible, they look cool, and they work!

IMO it's a good choice.
I gave one to a good friend of mine...he's using it on a 16'' carbine for dynamic shooting matches & 300m accuracy matches and has been 100% satisfied.
being a brake will make your 556 sounds like a 762

I'm very interested in getting an FSC 556 also.

Is the reduction in muzzle flip that noticeable?

I have a M1A Scout Squad which comes with its own muzzle brake. That is one loud SOB.

LOL, I have no doubt!

it is, according to my friend...but I havent tried it.

it hides flash better than the a2 and on a 16" m4 barreled gun, id say muzzle rise is about half.

It really is. I love mine and do not regret spending the money on one. Actually Im building another one with it, and the rest of my other builds will use one too. That is unless I move out of this state where I can use silencers :)

The SJC Titan is the best brake on the market.  The FSC556 is good, but not nearly as good.

I have a FSC556 perm attatched on an LMT 14.5" upper. I will say that the reduction in recoil/muzzle rise is noticable. I have no regrets on choosing this brake.

+1.... LMT 14.5" + FSC556 and no regrets. I have a vortex on my 16" which is much better than an A2 but went with the brake on the LMT so that I could shoot it back in NJ if I ever choose to. Concussion is not as bad as the RRA mil brake, similar to Cav Arms brake, and it makes follow up shots a bit easier as well. I have no problem making rapid yet controlled fire hits on a 10" gong at 100yds off-hand.

Works well, although its not enjoyable for shooters around you.  I once had them on all my rifles but switched to AAC Suppressors and went with their brake mounts.

Its gtg. Try it you'll see and feel the difference. Its an excellent piece of gear. The extra "noise" isnt as bad as alot of people make it out to be.

The best brake I have used personally is the surefire brake. I have the fsc and a buddy has the surefire. With the surefire brake there is no muzzle climb. It directs the recoil straight back.

Last month's "Front Sight" (USPSA magazine) had a great comparison piece on various brakes. The FSC556 reduces the recoil impulse about 50% while a few of the others were as high as 70%. However, most of the other brakes failed to mitigate, or even induced, muzzle jump. Of all of the brakes tested, the SC556 stayed "on center" through the entire fire, eject and recycle into battery event better than any of the others. It also seemed to be the best choice at the most reasonable price point. Some of the brakes tested cost as much as $300.!!! Another advantage to the FSC556 is the fact that it is also a decent flash hider while none of the others even attempt to address that issue at all.
I use one and like it very much. I've tried others but they don't compare. At night, my FSC556 seems to be about equal to an A2 FH at reducing muzzle flash.
Just my .02

Have one and love it. Went to a Zombie shoot we had here in PA was shooting at a swinger (standing at about 20yds). shot four groups of four at the head and landed 12. on target. that was the first time i shot that type of target ever. Point is i can make nice tight four or five shot groups w/ very lil muzzle rise and nice flash sup. for $100 or less. Im happy

Since I'm still fairly new to ARs, what does the installation of the FSC 556 require?

Is this something i could do own my own, or would I need a gunsmith?

You can do it yourself if you have the appropriate wrench.

I'm surprised to hear someone say that it wasn't enjoyable for shooters around them. I have been to several "no muzzle brake" prone matches with an FSC556, and no one said anything to me.

And what wrench is this, if you don't mind?

I can't remember off the top of my head. I think I used a crescent wrench last time, because it was all I had.

Sorry I'm late to the party.  Just shot my Middy with TTO.  Awesome. I could tell the difference in recoil reduction and will definitely buy another.
