I have been trying to removed the tapered pins from my front sight base to remove the FSB and they will not budge (yes, I am hitting them on the correct side).  I have already bent and mushroomed two punches.  How do I get these suckers out?

I always grind them down flush with the fsb, and use a center punch so its easier to stay centered. And dont be afraid to hit them.

One of the times that a "bigger hammer" truly is the answer...

I've done the penetrating oil, cold/hot, voodoo chants and scratched my rifle with a chicken's foot - but at the end of the day it's always come down to support the barrel and whack the dogshit outta the pins...

If the hammer you're using would not be appropriate for at least roofing a house, then you need more metal...  Something with "sledge" written on the wrapper...

(FWIW, I've never damaged a barrel OR the pins doing this....  The last one I took off like this just got replaced on the same barrel with the same pins on my 6920 yesterday...)

If you can wait buy one these from Brownell's - here

and this - taper pin starter

Spray with penetrating oil

Put in freezer for one hour

Heat the fsb with a torch

and yes use a big hammer.

Got 'em!  This was the winning ticket.  I ground down the pins flush and used a center punch.  I hit them so hard that I flattened the center punch (that's three ruined punches on this job, and they were good ones).

Thanks guys!
