| I am curious what the maximum effective range of a 5.56mm is if the rifle was set-up properly out of a 16" barrel vs a 18" barrel?? I am trying to see if the 18" barrel will contribute to something the 16" cant. |

So how far away would you need to be in order to be comfortable with someone shooting at you with one? well, that's an unusual question. are you planning for war with some Nato armed forces or local police ? my general concern is the skill level of the operator, not the weapon platform. any weapon is only as accurate as it is fired - i would be much more alarmed if the SEALs were shooting at me than the local PD in general. of course, i don;t plan on ANY of the good guys being on the other side ... with that being said - 400m minimum. at that distance, unless they have really decent training and practice and some skill ... and a decent scope ... i don;t think they will be THAT accurate. of course, i would be in cover. behind bricks. and steel hopefully. with my 30 mags of M855 for a decent response. just saying. i try to practice every once in awhile on a 600m range. without a scope, that's a bitch for me. of course, i was pretty good at that range with my old NM Garand. |

Its bullet weight and speed dependant. Using the same load/bullet, the 18 incher will launch faster than the 16 incher. The difference is probably 25-100 yards. Use a ballistics program to play the game. |
