ive got about $1,200 to work with. ive really been eyeing the S&W M&PT, but im staring to wonder what i could build for that money. the M&P has what im looking for in an AR. one question i have is: how come most home builds dont hold there value very often?

They dont hold their value because YOU built it. Not a reputable manufacturer. (not saying you cant do it right, just that there's no way of telling)
Get a lower or build a lower and buy a high quality complete upper and BCG.
BCM, DD, etc....

I say build, mostly because I like hunting down parts on the EE and assembling them myself.

If you are interested in it holding value I say buy a Colt.

im not just interested in holding the value. but its nice to knowits worth something. i wont buy a colt. no offence to colt owners, but for the price of a base colt i can get so much more in something else.

I doubt it.  A base colt is going for what, a grand or maybe 1100?  That's dirt cheap.

i dont want to drop $1,100 on a rifle that im going to spend another $500 in accessories on. i just never jumped on the colt bandwagon.

You don't have to spend 500 dollars on accessories.  Why would you think you have to spend more money? The base rifle plus a decent scope/red dot would be all you really need.

If you have $1200 to spend and aren't looking for the knowledge and satisfaction that you "built it" yourself then you should buy it.

I would build, building is more fun and you can make it exactly how you like it.

Other people can't see your personal cart, you'll have to copy and paste it for us to see what you bought.

If it was me:

16" BCM Middie upper = $475
BCM M16 BCG = $160
BCM charging handle = $20

Spike's lower = $100
LPK = $75
Mil-spec buffer tube kit = $55
Magpul CTR stock = $90
Magpul MOE pistol grip = $20

This is $1000.  Add a set of CavArms M4 style handguards and a LaRue BUIS, a good sling and sing mount, a couple Pmags, done for $1200.  Then invest in an optic and you are done.

If you are looking for a good setup on the cheap:
CMMG 14.5" M4 with YHM phantom flash hider complete = $550
Same lower as above, with sling and mount = $400
LaRue BUIS = $90
Add some Pmags and your done for $1100.

If you want an inexpensive setup:
Bushmaster 14.5" M4 with YHM Phantom flash hider complete = $525
Same lower as above but minus Magpul hardware = $300
Daniels Defense BUIS = $55
Add some pmags and your done for =  $925
