my brother came over with his friends dpms 16" carbine. i think it was supposed to be an m-4 style. i had no idea that dpms put out such poor quality rifles. this rifle was fairly new, about 6 months old, and not a lot of rounds through. the rattle in the receivers was what i thought excessive, the action felt horrible (rough and catchy) and the best group i got with it was 6 inches at 40 yards. the feed ramps were horribly cut out, and i mean horrible. my brother knows nothing about ar rifles, and i assume his friend is the same. i brought out my m&a parts CAR 16" with a mega lower and showed the difference. i have never considered my rifle high end, but it gives me 2-3 moa with wolf and never fails.
it this dpms just a bad rifle that got through, or is this what they sell?? just wondering as i was considering one of their rifles. |
| I dont own a DPMS rifle, but just finish building a DPMS lower, the finish, fit, and feel felt and looked better than my Noveske lower I built after it.........I also have been using DPMS lower parts, charging handles, and seem to work better than 'top brands'.........YMMV. |
| Have your brother ask his friend if he cleans his rifle with a power drill and carbide bit. DPMS is not top shelf but certainly should be FAR better than that. My LR-308 is sub-moa with hand loads. The DPMS lower i have for my TacSol upper is what I would describe as average quality. |
| Had several over the years, and curently run a LR308. It's fired a best 5 shot group at 100yds scoped, of about .400 inch. Only a couple at that, but still, most loads with the smk 168 and smk 175s are around 1/2 inch or so. Surplus and wolf with just the eotech, 512, haven't tried the 552xr308 at that distance yet, have been around 2-3 moa unsupported, prone, sitting, and just a little more on average standing. There is a serious problem with that particular rifle. |

Three DPMS, two are 308. All three shoot great. Have several other brands and performance is not lacking on the DPMS.
Yes, the triggers **SUCK**. Bill Springfield trigger jobs are required at least. One has a Geisselle, one has a JP, and one has an AR-Gold. The AR-Gold is the BEST, by far. The uppers and lowers fit just as sloppy as the rest. One of those $1.95 cute little red plastic jobbies tightens them ALL up. I shot 95 out of 100 at a High Power match, iron sights, from sitting with the 5.56 A2 20" the very first time I touched it. Had been cleaned and lubed and was using Black Hills 68rg Match. |

I have a 16" DPMS AP4 and it's really a nice, solid rifle. The trigger definitely lacks, but that's really the only thing I can fault. Fit and finish is great with absolutely no rattle between the upper and lower. I shoot just as good with the DPMS as I do with my Colt M4 I've been carrying everyday here in the sandbox (which was issued brand new with play between the upper and lower). I really think the DPMS is a quality rifle and that I'll be happy with it for years to come.

I have a couple DPMS factory rifles and several other builds on DPMS lowers with DPMS parts. They all shoot very well and all of them are tighter than any M16 I ever shot in the military.
My DPMS 20" Panther Bull has a factory installed JP trigger and will shoot under .5 MOA all day long and I can't recall ever having a misfeed in probably 3000 rounds. I have zero complaints with fit, finish, reliability or accuracy. Similarly, I have never had issues with any build on a DPMS lower or with DPMS parts. I have noted, mostly on the boards, a degree of large degree of snobbery involving ARs that comes very close to the logical fallacy that the more it costs the better it must be or, the only slightly less flawed argument that the logo on the side makes it shoot better or worse. There are some third sigma exceptions, but by and large with ARs, parts are parts and if properly assembled an AR will shoot to the limits of the barrel. The "mil spec" argument is not much better. Anyone with any experience in government contracting and acquisitions can explain the fallacy of thinking that "mil spec" means nearly as much as is attributed to it on the internet. Furthermore, "mil spec" often means the spec was derived as a compromise to meet conflicting requriements so "mil spec" may be far less than optimum for your needs. ––––- If an AR shoots 15 MOA with decent ammunition and does not have noticeable movement in the barrel or sights when you shake it, it IS the shooter. |

Got one in a trade and was going to sell it(chrome lined, DD Lite Rail, YH gas block w/ flip up front) but this^, swapped out the BCG for a BCM and kept it. |

I had a DPMS at work once, it fucking sucked.
Its barrel was marked 5.56 but I am pretty sure it was a .223 chamber because every couple mags a round would get stuck and have its rim ripped off and I would have to stick a cleaning rod down the barrel to get the round out. And this was with M855 and MK262 ammo, not wolf or anything like that. ETA: Also the peice of junk loved to double or triple fire, when you did a nice slow squeeze, follow through, release, BOOM. It fired a second and sometimes third shot when you let off the trigger. Really really annoying. |

Let me be the first to ask. Are you sure this was a complete rifle made by DPMS and not something put together on a DPMS lower? yup, complete dpms rifle. it had a 512, and surefire hand guard. i am kind of gathering that dpms is ok, that this must be a bad rifle that got through. even if dpms is hit and miss, i will stick with my m&a parts rifles. i love mine. thanks all for the replies!! |

FYI If the serial number ends with a K it is not a factory built rifle......... |
