I've run across a launcher that looks a lot like an M203 for sale.  The seller describes it as a 37mm launcher, and assures me it requires no special license.  I've also seen practice grenades and flares at local gun shows, although I assumed they were 40mm. A couple of questions:

1) are these launchers actually legal

2) Is an M203, a 40mm or 37mm?

3) what should I expect to pay for such a device, assuming their legal to won?

Thanks!

The 37mm flare launchers are ok. The 40mm LMT launchers are destructive devices, but legal to own with a tax stamp

It has been a lot of years since I fired one but the M203 was 40mm - and loads of fun.

My understanding is that the 37 mm flare launchers are technically legal as long as you are not firing a solid projectile with them, if you do that, it is technically a destructive device and would have to be registered as such.

Some also come with 12 ga adapters, but then that is a double edged sword as well as if you again fire anything pther than a 12 ga flare in them, you have in effect a shot gun with a 10" barrel.  I always wonder how an ATF agent or local law enforcement officer would view a 37mm laucher with a 10" barrel and a 12 ga adapter that rendered it capable of firing a 12 ga shotgun shell.  My gues is again that with the adapter and the capability, you are again running into registration and tax stamp issues.

Last time I saw one, the price was around $300 and I doubt they have went up much in price as they are still a fairly low demand item.

They are legal
37mm
As for price, a real M203 reciever will cost you 1K+ I believe. Spikes Tactical makes something similar one that mounts on a rail though for less.

If you fire anything other than CS,smoke, flare, or chalk out of a 37mm launcher you are illegal.

Otherwise they are signaling devices and require no stamp.

Randy Shivak will sell you a real 203 reciever with  37mm barrel as a title I device. Gives you the option to form 1 it later if you want but still around $2K. www.mr40mm.com

Check out Spikes Tactical. They have a 37mm that looks good. To me it would be a toy and all about the kool factor if I was to spend the money.
