Here's the scenario: You've got a friend wanting to purchase his very first AR. Cost is not a big factor, but he wants the "best bang for the buck". He would most likely prefer for it to be an off the shelf rifle rather than a build for the first. He's asking for your opinions and direction.
It's almost like getting to purchase your dream AR with out spending your money. The only sad part is that it isn't yours to keep. But I'm sure I'll get my turn to play! Where would you start?

I like my Rock River and they ship most of their rifles with their match trigger (but I think they charge a little more for it). I also had good luck building my own rifles. You can stretch your $$ further, get your lower for about $100 then order an upper with some extra bells and whistles.
Or, CMMG, is selling m4'geries for $599 right now. |

how about colt 6940....if money not an issue––LWRC M6A3.....or you could go with my fav and what I think is the best bang for the buck ––the S&W M&P tac model.
EDIT––––just saw Spikes has their ST-15 M4 w/ AA Piston rifle on sale for $1100....this maybe the best buy "on paper" there is. I say on paper because I've never used Spikes but I hear good things. |

Well, A 6920 has been mentioned numerous times and that is for a reason Im sure. Though, I have no experience with the Colt, so I cant honestly recommend one. I would say a Spikes ST-15. Have em swap out the m4 guards for a DD Omega and you are sitting pretty. It has everything you could want. A Daniel Defense Cold Hammer Forged 4150 chrome lined 1x7 barrel, MPI and HP tested barrel, full Auto MPI tested carrier with the black extractor, F marked FSB, etc, etc. All that and some of he best customer service around. Its a no brainer IMO. |

"Build" doesn't mean that you need an engineering degree to have an AR15...you can simply snap a complete upper and lower together. I'll +1 the BCM middy recommendation (without a carry handle - just get a Magpul rear MBUS sight instead). Second choice would be a 6920 at $1200 or less. Either way, you'll have a top notch rifle. |

I've owned many over the years, from Colt to Model 1 Sales to Oly Arms
I you can build one go that route....get everything you want as you build it. If you can't build one buy a Colt (6920 or 6520)...I really like Sabre Defence and LMT for they tend or rather were more than Colts. Olys are towards the lower end but then again its ONLY an AR. I sold my Sigg 556 Commando and purchased a 6920....$1800 for a high end poodle shooter, even a Sig, is still a poodle shooter. (My high end rifle is an HS precision in .338 Lapua) |

6920 or the BCM 16" Middy someone conveniently mentioned and linked to (G&R) a few posts up. Could also check out a LMT.
There are "better" than the above, but you'll pay for it. And there are "cheaper" than the above, but the quality may be lacking. It's up to you. Your mission requirements will dictate the direction you need to go with your choice. YMMV. |
| You can get a complete BCM 16" middy from G&R for $1,134. I'd take one of those over a Colt 6920 for a few reasons. Colt is afiliated with the UAW. I like a 16" middy configuration a lot more than a 16" carbine, and Colt doesn't make a middy. The people at Colt are less than pleasent on the phone. My brother in law has a Colt 6920 and I've shot it many times. It's a fine gun, but I refuse to support that company. |
The decision will probably fall on what we can purchase off the shelf locally since he's pretty ancious to buy. Out of the recomendations you all have listed so far, I have seen plenty of 6920's, a few Daniel Defenses, and lots of M&P's on the shelfs. I'd say the DD and Colt are in the runnings right now. Thanks for everyone's input.

| The decision was made. He just purchased the Colt LE 6940. We tossed around the Daniel Defense, Colt 6920, 6940 and the Ruger SR 556. I think he came out with an extremely nice rifle with the 6940, especially for his first! Now it's time to start shopping for some optics. Thanks for all of the suggestions. |
