As new not even brass on the deflector ,4 diget ser# what should I ask for this rifle?
Bob |

This is just a Sporter Target made about 1998 with no receiver block and it had the double screw which I replaced along with the original non chromed non lugged non flash hider barrel with a new in wrapper Colt A2 barrel. Had the NOS barrel on hand so swap was easy.
Oh.......whatever.... |

Looks like you should have just replaced the reciever with a Sporter Target Model and been done with it! You obviously don't have an R6551 there. You should use the :) more! Bob No he has a MT 6551 which is the same thing sans FH. His was made in 1998 and is a MT 6551,mine was made in 1991 and was made for three years and is an R6551! So in your thinking they are the same? A 6920 is just an SP1 without a slabside, and shorter barrell, different grips, maybe even a six position stock, mayby a flattop? I didn't know there so many similarities! Bob |

As new not even brass on the deflector ,4 diget ser# what should I ask for this rifle? Bob FYI, My 4 digit 6551 wants a brother, but I can't afford it. My SWAG would be $1,000 to $1,200. On the higher end with box, cleaning kit and papers of course. Yes I know what you mean ,It is from what I have heard here that the R-6551 is the closest thing to a M16A2 you can get. I think the 6550 Gov may really be that. But thanks to posters that helped me get my foot out of my mouth! There are just too many guns and so little time to learn about and grab them all,God help me if I ever hit the LOTTO! Bob |
As far as I can tell, the R-6551 is pretty darn close. You can get it closer by adding an M16A1/A2 bolt but you have to mill the sear block flush with the top of the lower for an M16 bolt to work. Ask me how I know??? Too, I would like to get a GI M16A2 barrel just for the sake of the bayonet lug...which is odd because I'll never have an excuse to fix bayonets. BUT...it just looks right. |

The R-6551 has no sear block ,they just used the c bolt carrier. You would have to have that little lightning link and maybe get a full circle bolt to make it work! Or so I have read (you could buy them in the sixtys for 39.00)! Bob Mine does. Pics tomorrow. |

It has changed over the years though the basic parameters remain the same. Mine is a much later SN than bobbyjack's. Mine is ST 0244XX much later than bobby's four digit. Likely, the sear block was added to the model at a later time. I would venture to guess that bobby's may also not be set up or drilled for the ability to convert to the standard M16AX series front pushpins. It may even be a large hole front pin setup. The 6520 has gone through similar changes. For instance, I have a good friend with a green label 6520. It has a large hole front lower and upper screw pin hole and an AR-15 carrier. Mine is a blue label Law Enforcement carbine that has a standard, mil spec front pin, an M16AX series carrier and M4 feed ramps. Same model but evolved B.O.M.s. ( B.O.M. = Bill Of Material, which is the list of parts that is passed to the manufacturing line for a particular model. It tells them what parts to use to make a certain product ) |
| Ekie did a 6551 serial number timeline a few years ago which should be in the archive. The consensus was the early ones had no sear block and a few of the very early ones even came from the factory with a bayo lug. Very early ones were in white boxes, but most shipped in blue boxes. |

Bob No he has a MT 6551 which is the same thing sans FH. Thanks, I learned something new today. A quick call to Colt confirmed that I do indeed have a MT6551 made in 2000 (not 98 as I thought) and that the difference is that the barrel shipped with no FH..............which I took care of with the NOS Colt A2 barrel. This is still on fine shooting rifle. OP, good luck with selling or whatever your plans are for the 6551 you have. |

I have a blue label 6551 that I bought during the AWB for $900. Has the sear block, screw pin (it's not drilled for a push pin) and had no bayo lug. I replaced the barrel with a new Colt M16A2 barrel so now it has a bayo lug.
It's my favorite rifle and would have to be in pretty damn tough financial shape to make me sell it. I'd like to have another one or two, but I never seem to come across them when I actually have money to spend.

| I have one in the ST 1808X serial # range that has the small front pin and the fence around the mag release lower recieve that is drilled so that it was easy to put the front spring, detent and push pin on it. There is one on Gunbroker right now serial #ST17011 that has the same lower, but is not drilled for the spring and detent and has the large screw holding the upper and lower together. Gives you idea when Colt made the switch. My upper also has C M on it and not C M B that was cast into 6551s made later. Both have the sear block. THIS IS my favorite rifle. |
