Hey Guys -

I'm finalizing my Recce build and before I move forward on purchasing the parts, I wanted to get some feedback from you on a couple of things.

1st I'm up in the air on hand guards. I'm torn between the Larue 13.2, DD M4 12", and lastly the Knights Free Float RAS (Long). I've seen quite a few people going the 13.2" route, but that seems like it would add a lot of weight to the system, so I was wondering those of you using them, what do you think of it? The other question I would have is between the KAC and DD rails. Both of them appear to be ~12" long, those of you who are using them what are your thoughts?

Lastly, I'm pretty sure I want to go with the Nightforce 2.5-10x24 NXS for the optic, but I wanted to get some feedback on that as well. Is that too much optic for this type of rifle?

Thanks for your help.

What length barrel? I used an 11" Larue on my 16" recce build

Here is a 12" KAC rifle length rail on my Mark 12 Mod 1 SPR

and a 12" DD on my SDM-R

I had the Larue on one of my rifles and the weight was noticeably heavier to my other one with the Knights URX. I have the same optic and it will be  more than enough for your rifle IMO..

ETA: Here's a pic of my first AR that I sold over a year ago..
Complete BM Lower
16" Armalite Stainless Steel Match Barrel
Larue 13.2 Rail
NF 2.5x10 compact w/Knigths mount
Harris bi-pod w/ Larue QD mount
VLTOR Emod Stock
Surefire M95 (tape switch hanging off cause I just put it on for the pic)
XTM panels

The optic is a matter of personal preference.  How far and what size targets do you want to shoot?  The 1.5-5x on my Recce works well for me. But I have good eyes and I'm happy with minute of prairie dog accuracy out of this setup.

I went with a 12" rail because I like to completely cover low profile gas blocks.  I don't remember why I didn't get an 11" rail.  I don't think the LaRue was available when I did this build. IMO there is no benefit to a longer rail on a midlength unless you are shooting iron sights an want the longer sight radius.  Of course that's all personal preference too.

Here's my 16" GTS Recon with 12" LaRue rail and Leupold Mark 4 1.5-5x.

I have a 12" DD rail on mine. I don't know if I'd want a 2.5-10x scope. I'd personally look at a 1-4x or 1-5x, however I have an ACOG on mine.

For 100 yards and beyond the limit of 16" barrel.

Bug22

Are you saying you have the same optic and its great for 100 yards and beyond or were you saying that 2.5-10 is overkill for this type of rifle?

That's the same exact barrel I have now on a build using the NF optic..I only have access to a 200 yard max range and it's more than enough..pretty sure you can stretch it out even further with the right ammo..

thanks Jboy

I'm rather new to magnified optics only having used Aimpoints and Eotechs...

I'm basically trying to figure out if it would make more sense to jsut go with a 1-4 since I really only have access to a 200 yard range as well. I would like the extra magnification because I think with that barrel and setup the weapon could go further out than 200 yards.

The only regret I have when I got the NF with the CQB reticle is that at longer ranges, the middle dot (forgot the MOA size) covers up alot of the target at 200 yards..Look at the a few other compact variables with different reticle set ups if your looking for precision shooting (horus comes to mind) IMO..or you can get a magnifier for your Aimpoint/Eotech if that's what your currently using..

Thanks for replying Jboy...I'm leaning towards getting the 2.5-10x24 NXS with the Mil-Dot reticle...I'm hopefully that this will help with the issue you described above.
