I just got back from the range where one of my bushmasters would not allow the bolt all the way back.
Once home I found that the recoil spring in the stock would not allow the bolt to move all the way back. I took the spring out and found three steel weights and a plastic keeper in the buttstock. I finally figured out that the steel weights and the plastic go inside the steel piece the bolt blows back against. Questions. What are the weights for? If I leave them out what happens? |

Did your buffer fall apart? |

Sounds like your buffer fell apart. Please get a new one.
The buffer assembly adds required weight to the recoiling bits. Retards bolt unlocking a bit. Very necessary. Early unlocking and cartridge cases full of pressure do not play well together. The weights inside the buffer also move inside a tiny bit. They function as anti bounce weight. Keeps the carrier from bouncing back away from the barrel extension (and partly unlocking the bolt ) when the B.C. reaches it forward most position. Edit to add,, Dead blow hammers are a great examples of anti bounce concept. |
