So, years ago pops bought a used AR from a guy in his Reserve unit.  It is a Colt A1 upper on a Sendra lower.  Other than gas rings and a new spring on the dust cover, the gun has held up fine, shoots pretty accurately and has been worth the coin he spent (less than 500, closer to 3 if memory serves) and a few years back in some horsetrading, he got an A2 upper, (possibly Bushie) 4 pos stock and buffer tube, and the pencil thin barrel was swapped to the A2 and he runs the gun like that now.  So, we are talking the other day about what he should build with the extra parts.  He is leaning towards a lightweight KISS, but on which upper?  I am thinking that he gets a new barrel and puts the A1 upper back together, using the A2 with a lightweight 16" bbl, whereas he is thinking that he wants the sight radius of a 20" with a short barrel and the 4 pos stock.  Basically, there has not been much discussion of a second lower yet, just a single lower that he can swap uppers on.  I am leaning on 42, so pops is not a spring chicken (not saying you're old dad, honest - yes he'll read this) and hanging a ton of shit on his guns is not his idea, and he'll stick with irons as his preffered sighting method.

Obviously guys like Denny and ADCO do quality work, but I think we can swap barrels ourselves, so which barrel would you get, and how would you configure the uppers and lower given the parts at hand.  While for the most part the AR sits in the safe, it has been on duty as the defensive rifle during backwoods and cross country outings.  Pops will alternate between his HK (not as often) the AR and his M1 Carbine as the truck gun on trips, so whatever is built will be built with that in mind.   Primary ammo is 55 gr. TAP for carry purposes.

Since your dad shares my boneheaded affection for irons, then 20" is the way to go.  Sight radius does matter
Here's a notion.  Put the pencil-barreled A1 upper back together, and mate it with a NoDakSpud A1 lower; trick it out with A1 furniture.

Build a carbine of whatever config pleases you with a collapsible stock.  Since the uppers should interchange, (presume the upper is actually A1 and not SP-1), you  can mix n' match to your heart's content.
Nice that you and your pop are working on this together.

A dissipater style would work as well if he wants a shorter barrel.
