Anybody have one?  Thinking about picking one up because it's optics-ready at a very low price.  It does look a little strange but I don't think I'd miss the forward assist/dust cover.  Aside from the gay name, would I regret it?

I have a .308 "Spork".

I would say it is OK in .308, but if you are looking at the 5.56mm version I would save some more pennies and buy something else.

I picked one up last month only because a local shop got a bunch in and offered me a really good price on one, a bit ahead of the price drop on others we've seen in the past couple of weeks.

Seems solid and I really like the new hard-sided cases (it's been a while since I bought a NIB DPMS AR), but I haven't shot it yet and don't really have any plans to right now with all the other ARs at my disposal –– probably just sit on this one for a while.

As a DPMS supporter, I would not buy that model.   It really doesn't make much sense since you can get a better DPMS model for $100 more, or for a few hundred get something else.

That's a very stripped down AR version.  I would only buy it if I had a kid I was teaching to shoot, or needed a basic throw away rifle for parts or a project.

I'm going to recommend you pass. I bought one like new during the panic for $700 only because of the price, after handling it and inspecting it I quickly sold it. Its condition was excellent but the bulky "slick side" upper, bulky gas block on pencil barrel, cheaply machined & finished BCG. It is not a rifle built for accuracy, more so for lightweight.

Pick up a Stag 3H, MUCH higher quality but still not an expensive gun. I just help a buddy find a Stag lower and 3H upper a couple weeks ago for under $900 total. There is no comparison between the DPMS and Stag.

My friend sold his Sportical last week and ordered all LMT stuff.  It was brand new and unfired.

Problems I have with the Sportical:
-Not chrome lined barrel
-1/9 barrel twist
-No forward assist
-No brass deflector
-No front sight (I like the traditional A2 front sight)
-Feels cheap like lots of corners were cut to produce it...

Then there's the trivial stuff like 4140 steel, commercial size buffer tube, etc.

I would Also recommend passing. At least until DPMS gets their QC up to par .

For just a little more money I would much rather get something like a Stag. If you have to, keep saving a little longer. You'll be glad

that you did later.

Like mine never had a problem with it, no jams and put close to 3,000 rds through it. I pull the trigger it goes boom and taken down a lot of yotes in some really bad weather between Illinois and Wisconsin winters. In my opinion its a underrated rifle, so what no dust cover and forward assist its no big deal and havent needed either one yet. Here is a pic with my hunting buddy! I just noticed most of the above posts have not even fired this rifle or taken them into the fields and used em for what I bought it for well maybe mines a fluke but I have had no problems with mine in some really bad ice storms and weather that most people would never go into. Example: Its about 5:00pm middle of January Iam hunting for yotes a few miles from Pecatonica Illinois, I lost track of time calling in a pack of yotes, it gets dark, a storm rolls in while iam waiting, my place i was holed up at starts icing over, but i waited. Got a big old alpha dog in my sights, pulled the trigger boom, yote takes a dirt nap. Go and get him, start walking back, and yes i fucked up I was pretty far away from the truck. Gps says Iam about 7 miles away from the truck. As Iam walking back in complete darkness, I fell into a stream and the rifle took a swim with me. As i walked up a ridge another yote pops up not too far from me, raise up sighted him in, clicked off the safety squeeze trigger, boom, another yote down. With the excitemnt of everything I really didnt know how cold it really was and after a while its now downright freezing. Made it back to the truck freezing with ice all over me the dead yotes and the rifle. I thought well lets see if this gun still works, covered in ice, dip in a stream with frozen mud and sand in it click the safety aim at a berm a little ways out squeeze rifle goes boom again.I dont support anyone or any company I just tell it like it is. This gun does what I need it to and think its worth every penny, hell buy one or dont buy one I couldnt care less but before passing judgement on a weapon know what its able to do in the real world and if you never even put rounds on target with it how can you say its worth it or not. Time for tacos!!!

Those items (and others) were left off in the interest of weight and simplicity (with the added benefit of the rifle coming in at a lower price point, not in order to do so).

It is meant to be a lightweight sporting rifle (which is exactly how it sounds like you use yours), not a defensive rifle (which it sounds like some here think it somehow aspires to be).  DPMS makes plenty of other models for those other applications.

You get it at Marks?

Aside from the obvious, is there any other difference between this and a regular DPMS carbine?

I don't mind a 1/9 twist at all but how important is a chrome-lined barrel?

"Important" is all in the eye of the beholder.  It makes cleaning the thing SO much easier, but that's the biggest advantage.

Lets NOT confuse the DPMS models however. The sportical is a cheap version. The other DPMS models such as the panther lite ap4 & .308 models are gtg.

Mine's great for what it is and at the price i paid for it.   I don't sugar coat it and pretend its a Colt,  but i have thousands of rounds downrange without a hitch (other than when i used some worn out 20 round GI mags ).   Every 150-200 rounds i clean it, keep the BCG lightly lubed, and it is good to go.    The slim barrel and light weight are a bonus to me because i also use mine for 'yotes and other varmints.  It does 1.5" groups at 100 with cheap XM-193 ball ammo and an inexpensive 3-9x40 scope and no brass deflector knob means it puts the cases in a neat little pile and i dont have to search for them all day when i am just shooting at the range.

I wold prefer a Chrome barrel,  but as i said, i keep it clean and dont shoot dirty ammo (Wolf-etc).

That  said,i woulnt take this rifle to Iraq or anything ,  but  i would  have no problems considering it for home defense use if needed.    Mine has established a great track record for reliability with the way i use it and maintain it.     I treat it like a $700 rifle, not like a "budget AR", which it is.   $700 goes a long way with other types of firearms, and i could have purchased a no frills MArk - V Weatherby for what i paid for the thing,  so i treat it nice,  but i dont plan on spending any money on it over and above maintaining it and possibly getting a bettr scope  (which i can use on anything else later).   I replaced the trigger pins with some anti-walk pins though

A 6920 Colt is at least $1400 still unless you get lucky and find one cheaper––––-  thats a $700 difference   (I know because i'm shopping for one––––  but i'm shopping for a Colt strictly because i'm a Colt maniac, not because the DPMS is deficient in any way for my uses  .   I underlined that because i think the Sportical was designed for the way i use the rifle, as well as the other poster above who shoots coyotes with his.

When you are  hunting, it is rare to shoot more than 5 times a day unless you are at a prairie dog town.  You carry the rifle much more than shoot, so light weight is a plus and the accuracy is good for a cheap AR considering the generic XM-193 i used to group fire it.   Plus, with all the ronds i have put down at the range, i know it will go "bang" everytime it needs to  if it is just sitting in the corner of the bedroom waitting for a zombie attack

Note:   When i bought mine, i read  some reviews simillar to others in this thread i considered  selling it,   but  after i used it, i realized i liked it for my purposes.

If you don't mind waiting for 5+ months, get in on the Stag 2H kit group buy ($609) before it's over. I picked up an LRB lower for $85 (made by JV, producers of Double Star). Total price for a great weapon incl. shipping/fees will be $705. Unfortunately, I had to pay *extra* for a post-ban config since I'm in CT. Otherwise it would have been 10 bucks less.

That's one of the best and most realistic reviews I've seen in a long time. The sportical is a great little gun for it's intended purpose which is exactly what you seem to use it for.

If you are looking for a Colt look around a little more. I've seen tons of them lately for $1250 or a little less. Even the ones on gunbroker are going for that now.
