What are the differences between the A1,2,3 models

A1 is the old style. Fixed carry handle.

A2 replaced the A1. Still has a fixed carry handle, but the rear sight is different.

I believe the A3 is actually a full-auto (instead of burst) version of the A2. I might be wrong. Civilian manufacturers often use the designation A3 and A4 interchangeably for describing a "flat-top" receiver. AFAIK the military designates flat top receivers as A4.

That's kinda it in a nutshell. You can get into a hell of a lot more detail though. I'm pretty sure there are encyclopedia sized books written about technicalities in what is considered A1, A2, A3, A4, A5.

When describing AR-15s; A1, A2 and A3 refer to the upper receivers, most notably the rear sight.

A1

A2

A3 (same as A2 but with a detachable carry handle)
